I have been reading "Putting Amazing Back Into Grace" by Michael Horton. It is an excellent book, well worth the read. It is the doctrines of grace on a popular level.

I am also reading "Worship in Spirit and Truth" by John Frame in preparation for a sermon series on Worship later this year.

I just finished "To America" by Stephen Ambrose. It is a seris of short essays on American history by a first rate historian. I finished his "D-Day" book just before Christmas.

Little by little I am reading the Reformed Pastor, by Baxter.

Starting a men's Bible study this week with the men in the church using "The Disciplines of a Godly Man" by Kent Hughes.

I have a couple of others "in the process" ... a very long process ...

You guys got anything interesting going??

What about your "reading philosophy"? You have one? I try to read broadly -- to keep several balls in the air at once, so to speak. I like to read philosophy/church growth, history, devotional, novels. I think reading widely makes one a better speaker. It also provides sermon illustrations. That's one reason I love history. But I am always on the lookout for good recommendations (from people who konw what they are talking about :D )

    REading
    Knowing God J.I. Packer
Take a dip now and again into the Existence and Attributes of God by Charnock
Now and again dip into vol. 2 of Schaff's History....seems like hard reading to me....just can't hang in there.
Just finished the Rise and Fall of The Third Reich.
Also, the Mind of God by a "big bang" believer whose name I can't recall right now
Try to read broadly as well. I especially like to read John Piper's books.

Gave away my copy of Horton's "Putting the Amazing Back into Grace" to an evangelist who was unsure of how to "juggle" his theology with the typical practice of evangelists.

BTW, he left evangelism shortly thereafter and has been an excellent pastor ever since.

Great book. Ugly couple pages right near the end that jump into infant baptism, but other than that lapse I found it a great book. God bless you reading it!

Haven't gotten that far yet ... I am amazed at how simple he makes it, for someone who is very learned. I had lunch with him a few years ago in Brazil. His eschatology is an abomination :D but he is a nice guy.

At the moment, I am into reading biographies. My current books are: Words From A Fearless Heart, a collection of thoughts by Laura Ingalls Wilder. My second book is Meeting God at Every Turn, Catherine Marshall,,,a spiritual autobiography.

We can learn so much by how people lived their lives. Some from a spiritual persepctive and others just from life experiences.

I don't always read Christian books, but make Christian applications from them that later serve me in preaching the Word, or just talking with people along the way.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Just finished "The Cross Centered Life" by C.J. Mahaney (I highly recommend it). Reading through "Bitesize Theology" by Peter Jeffrey (Evangelical Press) and when I finish later on this week I'll go back to "Know the Truth" by Bruce Milne (IVP). I'm also working through "Christ Centered Preaching" by Bryan Chappel (Baker).

My reading schedule always includes a book on preaching, a book for the soul, usually a doctrinal book, and I'm slowly starting to reintroduce myself to novels and outside reading. So I'll have four going. Hard though since I have what would be described as ADHD.
