    Dear Pastors and Ministers,

Do you have a list of scriptures that you believe would stir up significant controversy and offense in your congregation if you ever preached on them?

I know of three possible ones:

    1. Ephesians 6:5-9
    2. 1 Timothy 6:1-2
    3. Ephesians 5:22-33

    Do you have any?

    Thanks for the responses.

How about Titus 2:5? A simple message preached on this verse split the church I was in. Seems like women don't want to be "keepers at home."

I don't think it should matter how controvesal the scripture passage is, preach it anyway! It's all God's word, and 2 Timothy 3 16 says:
All of it is there for a reason. Yeah, it got real quiet when my pastor preached on Titus two, but what older ladies that don't neseceraly hold to that passage don't understand, is that younger girls like me NEED to know what that passage means! I need to know that one day I'm to be a submissive wife. I need to know that I can't preach. I need to know what my place is in the church is. I need to know that I should be a keeper at home. And that goes the same with any passage of scripture. Someone in your church needs what it says. And don't let someone's criticisum stop you from preaching ALL of God's word. If God has dealt with you, and wants you to preach a message, go ahead!
I agree there are quite a few verses that would ruffle more than a few feathers...but if it does, then they needed ruffleing!
My pastor has stepped on my toes with more than one sermon, but I knew I needed it!
I'll never forget a sermon my preacher preached. It was on forgiving others. I can still see it now. "WHAT RIGHT DO YOU HAVE TO HARBOR UNFORGIVNESS TOWARDS ANYONE WHEN GOD FORGIVES YOU EVERY DAY!?" He shouted. I nearly ran to the alter then. {A woman in my church publicly emberrised me about my mom's past and mine in front of my pastor, and a missionary, and quite a few other church members, and I ran crying from the church that night, and I just couldn't seem to forgive her...untill my pastor's words got through my thick scull!} She and I spoke privatly after the service, and got things right, and I felt fee of a heavy burden...finaly! My point being, his sermon, though very convicting, helped us to get right with our Lord. I need that, and I'm quite sure the members of your churches need those type of things preached on too.
    Remember:
Preach the word; be instant in season, out
of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all
    longsuffering and doctrine.

Are you LOOKING for trouble? I would have no trouble preaching on any NT passage. There are some, though, that I am sure would upset some members.

I Cor 11 on male headship, on haircovering, on hair length

    Heb 6 on insecurity

Acts 2:38 on repent and be baptized

Judges 11 and Jephthah's sacrifice of his daughter

or the angel and the "stirring" of the waters at the pool (John 5:4-5, I think)

I wouldn't hesitate to preach on any of the scriptures. The problem I have is that often preachers go to extra lengths to be controversal, going to the pulpit to inflame rather then exhort, instruct and inform.

In my opinion I think alot of people have trouble when preachers preach against seperation. My Pastor preached a few months back out of 2 Corinthians 6:11-18 on Seperated Saints and he really used verses 14 and 17 alot. His points of seperation was
    1. Be seperate in your conduct
    2. be seperate in your conversation
    3. be seperate in your company
    4. be seperate in your casual time
    5. be seperate in your composistion(music)
    6. be seperate in your clothing
    7. be seperate in your churches

We had people get mad over that message more than any he has ever preached before. I am thankful though that he preached the truth it really helped me and my family. We have a lady that comes by herself now becasue when the Pastor was preaching point 4 he mentioned about nascar, and NFL etc.... and he was a huge racing fan so he got mad abd left.

So I will say when you preach messages about seperation of anykind you will have people who want like it.

The sermons that got me in trouble (wish I had preached 'em even harder).

Acts 10:28--What God Showed Peter--Racism is a Sin.

Rom 8:12-13--If You Live Accoring to the Flesh, You are Lost

Rom 8:14-17--The Heart's Cry (another sign of a true believer).

Curious about what was controversial in this one...... </font>[/QUOTE]There were a lot of folks at that church who did not have an internal witness of the Spirit (or, for that matter, much of an external witness), and they greatly objected to being told that a person could have "gone forward" and "gotten saved" (made a profession) without really being born again.

Now don't get upset with me, but imho I would walk out on that kind of message, too. Only point 3 is based on the Scripture text. The rest is opinion of the pastor, sucked out of his thumb. That is NOT separation; that is the kind of preaching that is subtle abusive and legalistic.

Would you be willing to let me post this as a NEW topic (no name or finger-pointing at you or your preacher) and discuss this more clearly? Keep it here in "pastoral".
