My pastor has a note hanging up that says--

"Church was meant to be geared to meet people where they are at, not where they need to be."

What do you think of this?

I like it, but I would balance it out a little more.

Meet me where I am, and help me find the way.

I would change it to say "Church was meant to be geared to meet people where they are at, and it is also geared to help us be where we need to be." The idea of it being a warm inclusive fellowship that encourages one another to love and good deeds.

Hebrews 3:13, "But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin."

I think it sounds rather inviting, Saggy.

Once we find out their state, then we can work on getting them to where they need to be without shoving it in their faces.

Sorry, it strikes me as one of those cutesy feelgood quotes with no scriptural basis.

    Regards
    Bob

I don't know, Bob. Our Lord Jesus met each and every one of us where we were and began bringing us to where we need to be. The first step is to meet the unsaved where they are and let our Lord take them the rest of the way ( often, He will even use us to do it).

Jesus met the Woman at the Well and CONDEMNED where she was at! He didn't give a pious platitude, but a "you're a sinner and you're not where you're supposed to be!"

Saggy, I don't care for that motto. Sounds a little to "user friendly". Church is a place to worship and grow and fellowship, not to wallow in "where we're at".

Maam, I would like to say that I understand you question as to what this statement means or says, but.... Have you asked your pastor about this note? There may be a chance that it has a certain meaning that he is trying to get across to his people....
I have also noticed that those that have replied to your post have voiced their oppinion on their likes and dislikes of your pastor's note.
I would simply like to suggest that you do not allow others opinion of what your pastor has placed as a note to effect your view of him or his message.
As for the rest of us, It is very easy to say that we would or would not have worded something in such a way.... but, this may have been what God touched this pastor's heart with.
Let's be careful not to touch the Lord's annointed.

    Oh, Mr. Groves1611,

I love my pastor. I work for and with my pastor (I sere on his staff.)

I agree with the statement. I was just trying to strike up conversation, not go against the Lord's annointed. Besides, I am annointed, too.

Considering that Jesus was good at meeting people where they were at (at a well, on a road, at a near-stoning), I'd say that's a pretty good reminder.

Isn't that just about the only place that you CAN meet people?

I don't normally post in this forum, but I thought on this topic I would. I have read the responses to the OP and have read and re-read the quote.

Upshot: I like it. I really like it. I can't say what specific meaning it has to your pastor. Like it was mentioned, it may have a very personal meaning to him.

I guess to me, the meaning is Church is where people meet to Praise the Lord. It is also where they come broken hearted, searching, in pain, and lonely. The quote to me means that if I am in the church where those people come, I am not to judge those persons, but listen. Not to tell him where where they need to be, but to thank God they are here.

After looking at this and praying about it. I am glad God sent someone to meet me where I was at in Feb of 1985. That someone did not beat me up or condemn me. I remember his words. " I can see that you are at the end of your rope. The knot you tied is coming loose and you are losing your grip."

He proceeded to show me where I could be. "Safe in the Father's hand if I just turned from the sinful ways that had gotten me where I was.... and surrendered my life to His Son who gave His life for..." me.

You see, I think that is how our Lord did it. He met them where they were (and still meets people there), and shows them where they could be. We need to be willing to do the same.
