I'm afraid my philosophy of ministry is different from this. I think we need to gear our programs, etc., to glorify God primarily. I don't see how moving or canceling a worship service for a football game glorifies God or puts Him in preeminence.

I am sorry, Andy. Thanks for pointing out that I was not being clear.
As disciples of Jesus, we are to emulate Him. Our motivation in fulfilling the Great Commission is to glorify Him and the Father. That is the foundation upon which all we do is built. We are to do all things to the honor and glory of our Lord. I made the assumption that that was understood. The message and motive must be the same... However, the methods have changed and must change to reach the intended audience. This was the main point I was alluding to.

That's great, Gayla. You will not have to defend your priorities! It starts here at 7PM which is right in the middle of church service.

Let's see, maybe I could play the organ for the song service and if I leave, they could sing the invitation hymn, a cappella? :D

I grew up in Baton Rouge---home of the LSU Fighting Tigers!!! I've been to countless Tiger football games! I'm glad they have a shot at the National title!

But I will not cancel my Sunday Nite service!! [IMG] They can win without me watching!! [IMG]

    Blackbird

PS---now, if I'm not gonna cancel for the Tigers---I for sure won't be cancelin' for the Super Bowl!

For people to be tied to tradition can be a sign of bondage. But if tied to the world can be a sign that the values of the world are more important. You can almost be sure what will happen if you have an evening service at the same time as the Super Bowl.

Most people have VCR's they can use them.

I've been to several Super Bowl parties where we watched the game on video. the game was usuallly still in progress, so 2 VCRs were used.

    What about changing the time?

Watching a game on video is just not the same. Some one will tell you who won.

We're moving our service from 6:30 to 6:00 PM.

This just my opinion but I feel that this is very wrong. I am wondering do you think the Lord is pleased with moving or changing the service for the Superbowl??? I mean really do you think he is pleased with the fact that the day the game is played is in his day and that people take time from hin to watch some football game. Oh yeah they may have a little devotion but what are they seeing in between all of it and is there mind really in the Lord.
One final thing I don't think you need gimmicks to reach people all you need is to tell them the truth. I know that is what I needed and I heard it in a church service(campmeeting to be exact)and that is what opened my eyes to my lost condition.

Showard93: "I am wondering do you think the Lord is pleased

Blackbird and Thankful are speaking of the
Sugar Bowl on Sunday, 4 Jan 2004.
    The Superbowl is every year.
    Blackbird's LSU and Thankful's Oklahoma
    is once in a lifetime.

The largest Baptist Church in Norman [Home of
the Oklahoma Sooners of The University
of Oklahoma (OU)] is canceling their Sunday
    Night Service.

    As shown in this thread:
    http://www.baptistboard.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=12;t=000521

the Sunday nite service is a man-made meeting.

    Congrads, Brother Showard93 on your
100th post. Do those 100 posts
each and every three days and by the
end of 2004 you will be approaching 13,000 [IMG]

I believe that God is pleased with the way our church handles it.

We don't cancel services for the Game. But we join with other churches and borrow our High School gym to throw a youth Superbowl Party with a 32 foot screen!!

Our members work with other church members all day that Sunday in setting up. Since only a part of the church is involved (mainly youth workers) in the actual party, We still have our regular service that starts at 7:00.

After the service most of the churches stop by the gym for the rest of the game and cleanup.

Last year we had around 400 students show up and heard a gospel message at half-time! How many churches reach that many teens on one Sunday night.

It is about priorities, and winning souls to Christ is ours.

ps If you are around Sutton, WV on Superbowl Sunday, feel free to stop by the High School to Watch the Game!

How many did you actually reach?? In other words, how many of those are actually coming now, a year later?

In other words, how many of those are actually coming now, a year later? </font>[/QUOTE]By "reaching", if you mean how many were saved as a direct result of that night, I have no idea. But I do know that 400 heard the Gospel message. To some a seed may have been planted, Some may have been watered, and I know of a few that have been harvested. Only God knows the end results. But it's up to us to put the Gospel into peoples hands, I'm sure if we do our jobs, God will do his.

Also, since this was an effort of many churches of different Denominations some churches benefited more than others.

We've canceled church on Sunday evening for the Blessing of the Fleet, a community-wide event. Someone brought up the idea of watching the Superbowl at the church. There was much opposition and we did not. What's the difference?

No Evening Services at our Church so we don't have a conflict.

Anybody want to move your membership?

We accept non-resident tithing members! :D

I want Blackbird to know that we had church on Sunday evening, January 4, 2004. We did move the time to 6:00 instead of 6:30. We had twice as many in that service as we did on the evening service on Mother's Day...So more people honoring Mothers than Sooners...

    Anyway....

LSU beat the Sooners...stomped all over them.

I congratulate LSU on their Championship [IMG]

Now the Super Bowl is another story, I don't care if I see it or not.

I believe it would be wrng to cancell services due to the Super Bowl or any other sporting event. It puts the event before GOD. To have a service or functon at church in conjunction with th Super Bowl or other event would be good and could actualy be used to bring non church goers in to the church. As long as the focus on GOD is not lost, the Bowl is cool. GO TITANS!!!!!!! :D
