Mexico Harsh to Immigrants

Well, it looks like the Mexicans are way ahead of us, but we're catching up.

Oh, a little bit, maybe. I think quite a few people would like us to.

Making just being here illegally a felony, for example; that would lead to the kind of exploitation the article talks about. I don't think they'd be robbed & beat up by police all that often, mostly by people who do that sort of thing already - but they would not be able to complain.

 

In the sense that the Republicans recently tried to pass a law making illegal entry a felony, that is true.

On the other hand, if we were to make it a felony to employ or otherwise place illegal aliens in jobs, it would make it much, much harder for people to abuse them, as is done to them in Mexico.

If turning them in would be tantamount to a confession of one's own guilt, employers would no longer have anything to hold over their heads.

Correct!

Don't forget, folks, you and I can be arrested for criminal trespass onto private property even if for some harmless act like taking photographs for a hobby.

Also, don't try entering many other countries as an illegal immigrant - an univited guest - unless you want to do some jail time verses just getting sent back home on a bus.

The key word in "illegal immigrants" is "illegal" and it modifies the description of "immigrants" who'd otherwise be legal and welcome here.

 

So we should catch up to the Mexicans in our handling of illegal immigrants?

 

Obviously our country will never catch up to Mexico or should I say lower itself to thier standards. I just don't understand why they do not want to go through the process of becoming legal, they have come here for the American way of life. Being a citizen of this country of ours is a great priviledge , why not honor that priviledge by going through the process of obtaining citizenship.

 

Because big Corporations and others that use their labor want them to be illegal...that is why. They have rights as legal ..they are really at will when they are not.

Like I have said in the past ..who will bush pick up the phone for if it came down to you or a Tyson lobbyist or a Wal-mart lobbyist.

I understand that Big Business likes the idea of cheap labor and wanting hispanic to therefore remain illegal but what I want to know is what goes on in the mind of the illegal, what is it that keeps them from not wanting to be legal citizen of this country.

 

I don't believe America needs to be like any other nation in particular. We've always gone the extra mile for humane treatment of everyone. With respect to illegal immigrants we need to enforce the laws fully and completely. Apparently we need to strengthen our laws such that illegal immigration results in something more than a free bus ride back to the starting gate and so that helping others immigrate illegally is also a serious crime. I favor making breaking immigration laws a felony crime with jail time as a penalty. I'd put those inmates to work on public projects to offset the problems caused by illegal immigration and then, at the end of their sentence, send them home. I'd also work, through Constitutional amendment if necessary, to end the "free" citizenship to children born of illegal immigrants just because they stepped across the border. I also favor aggressive enforcement at the borders including use of force to stop the unapproved and unwelcome entry into our nation. I'd make it very difficult for people to come into this country illegally raising the bar on their personal benefit verses risk analysis. The same goes for the cost of labor. Strict enforcement would raise the bar on labor costs hopefully making it more attractive to legal residents and eliminating the unfair advantage employers who use illegal immigrant labor might have over others. Lex et ordo!

 

Comment on your usual "it's the fault of President Bush" line will be skipped except to say that, no, he has not done all that he could or should to enforce the existing laws and neither has any other recent President. I'm pushing him for that as well as Congress by frequent communications.

I will comment on your assertion that "big corporations" are to blame: Perhaps there are some that knowingly engage in such practices but I don't think that's the main problem area. In most states, private business employees are "at will" and even the collective bargining rights of organized labor are limited to some excent. I just don't see that as a major incentive for hiring illegal workers over legal ones. I'm betting most illegal immigrants work in the farming, construction, and general labor pool verses the "better" jobs of large corporations. These are seasonal jobs that "pick up" workers short term as needed. I'm thinking most of them work for small business and individuals on an "as needed" basis rather than on regular salary and wages. One thing that probably makes them attractive is that they work hard - they need to and want to earn the money - which is an admirable ethic but doesn't change their status.
