Hurricane Katrina

I'm praying for everyone I know or don't know in the path of this and other storms. There are several small storms that wipe away familes homes, crops and live stock. I really hope that everyone comes though whatever storm is raging pruned and healthy.

 

One of my very closest friends lives in Gulf Breeze, FL. She and her husband evacuated last year with whichever hurricane thundered through there. They were fortunate--they had only minor damage to a shed roof and lost a couple of trees in their back yard. Their next door neighbor on one side suffered similar mild damage....but the neighbor on the other side had their entire house gutted by a huge tree through the roof and then all the water damage. Also, her father-in-law's home was COMPLETELY destroyed. The photos i've seen of the carnage there was unbelievable. She took videos to share with all of us safely up here in Georgia out of harm's way, and we couldn't comprehend that level of devastation.
They managed to ride out this year's big hurricane with no damage again, but she said that STAYING there through a hurricane was very scary.
As it happens, she was already planning to be out of the area as this latest hurricane--Katrina--heads once again in her direction. She's GLAD she won't be there.
My prayers for safety and comfort are with you all.

 

They are telling us to prepare for the worst here. We are 80 miles to the east of New Orleans. Of course, they always tell us to be ready, and we are.

Won't the land slow her down some?
Not that a cat three will be any better.....

 

As tightly wound as Katrina looks to be it may not slow down much until it is well inland.

The track of and the second landfall for Katrina depends on how quickly the upper level high splits over the Southeast and how strong the upper-level trough coming in from the northwest digs southwest. The most recent computer models show a consensus track over southeast Louisiana. One concern is that if the upper ridge remains stronger than expected, then Katrina would continue on a westerly track longer and the overall track would shift to the west. Our latest thinking is that Katrina will make landfall near noon Monday over extreme southeastern Louisiana. Conditions will begin to deteriorate later Sunday, well in advance of the storm, with tropical-storm-force winds reaching the coast Sunday night and hurricane-force winds reaching the coast Monday morning. The winds will be strong enough to down not only trees and power lines but also bring down structures and make missiles out of unsecured objects. As the storm nears the coast Monday, a devastating storm surge will be pushed into the lower Mississippi Delta as the powerful southeasterly winds pile water into the area. The storm will also bring flooding rains well inland, and the risk for tornadoes north and east of the path of the center.

Katrina is now a catagory 5 hurricane.

They are hoping it will slow down some before landfall, but then again it may not.

I hope everyone is prepared. Even here in Alabama as far north as we are they are telling the counties just west of us to prepare to be without power for several days. I hate to think about how bad it will be down in NO.

 

Boy and the hurricane runs through November !I live in Western Pa .Will get alot of rain maybe .We prayed in Church this morning for all the people down there in the hurricane's path .

Praying for life and limb to be spared if the
worst happens the Big Easy could be a semi-
Atlantis I cannot even fathom the costs of a city
in high water, but for now it is getting life
and limb to higher ground and out of the path
of this killer hurricane.

 

We are as prepared as we can be here, east of New Orleans. If we had somewhere to go, we would have gone, I believe. Not alot of options, but then again, we aren't in New Orleans. Deep down, I think we will be fine, but you gotta have a healthy respect for a category 5 hurricane. I will post back as soon as I am able after its all over with. Thanks for your prayers!

It may be bad for southern Mississippi and southern Alabama as well. The norheast quadrant is the strongest part of a hurricane and that side is headed for those areas.

May our God have mercy on everyone in this storm's path.

 

Hurricane Could Leave 1 Million Homeless

When Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans on Monday, it could turn one of America's most charming cities into a vast cesspool tainted with toxic chemicals, human waste and even coffins released by floodwaters from the city's legendary cemeteries.

Experts have warned for years that the levees and pumps that usually keep New Orleans dry have no chance against a direct hit by a Category 5 storm.

That's exactly what Katrina was as it churned toward the city. With top winds of 165 mph and the power to lift sea level by as much as 28 feet above normal, the storm threatened an environmental disaster of biblical proportions, one that could leave more than 1 million people homeless.

"All indications are that this is absolutely worst-case scenario," Ivor van Heerden, deputy director of the Louisiana State University Hurricane Center, said Sunday afternoon.

The center's latest computer simulations indicate that by Tuesday, vast swaths of New Orleans could be under water up to 30 feet deep. In the French Quarter, the water could reach 20 feet, easily submerging the district's iconic cast-iron balconies and bars.

Estimates predict that 60 percent to 80 percent of the city's houses will be destroyed by wind. With the flood damage, most of the people who live in and around New Orleans could be homeless.

"We're talking about in essence having _ in the continental United States _ having a refugee camp of a million people," van Heerden said.

Aside from Hurricane Andrew, which struck Miami in 1992, forecasters have no experience with Category 5 hurricanes hitting densely populated areas.
