Quality Bibles?

If you're looking for the best quality KJV, I would suggest that you try RL Allan (www.bibles-direct.com). I have an Oxford bound by RL Allan in Cape Levant Goatskin, full yapp, and it is extremely nice. Cambridge is definitely the best production Bible, but I think RL Allan can give them a run for their money when it comes to exotic editions.

Another possibility to investigate is the Nelson Signature KJVs. I believe the study Bible is already out, and supposedly the slimline KJV is available (though I have yet to see it at my local bookstore, which stocks the rest). This series is a kind of deluxe edition printed on special paper, bound in very flexible, rich leather. My wife has the NKJV slimline and it is produced to a very high standard.

One last contribution. Since you mentioned Cambridge, I should share my experiences with Cambridge Bibles. I have quite a few of them -- the Bible I'm currently teaching from is the wide margin KJV in calfskin -- and they really are the market leader in terms of quality. Once you've used a Cambridge Bible for a while, what the other major publishers call 'genuine leather' will not impress you too much.

Having said that, if you go the Cambridge route, shop around. Even within specific lines, there is a fairly wide range of variation. For example, I have two of the wide margins, and the first featured calfskin so stiff it was a pain to open. The second is supple and flexible. Your best option is to find a store that stocks a variety of Cambridge Bibles and handle them all.

Actually Dr. Bob, I've found they still have the same problem. I've got a friend who got his last one through "Bearing Precious Seed" and it has held up stupendously! Just a thought!

I blieve that Cambridge is one of the top bibles on the market. I have one that I love. Also, I have a Thompson Chain Reference Bible, printed by Kirkbride. It is made to a high quality and will, no doubt, stand the test of time. I know a man who used one for 25 years and never had a crack in the binding or a page come out of it. He told me the secret was to oil the leather once in a while. I took his advice and have seen bibles last far longer than I had experienced in the past.

 

Tthis thread made me check to see if I still had
one particular Bible around. Sure enough, there
it was, back behind the other ones on the shelf.
Not sure why it was there at all.

Don't buy this one: Nelsons KJB Study Bible
with wide margins. I had it One Single Month
before the last few pages, which included part
of the index and all the maps, separated.
Before another month, the front inside cover
started separating.

I had bought it on sale for $39 + tax and soon
learned why it was so cheap! I had been very
careful, upon first buying it, to open it properly
and to carefully loosen the pages as sug-
gested. I even carried it In The Box I bought it
in, still it fell apart. Fortunately, I contacted
Nelson, they sent me a catalog, and they
allowed to choose a new Bible.

I just received a Cambridge Wde-Margin in Goatskin leather, the leather is so soft and supple. How would you compare the Cambridge Goatskin to the Allan's Bible Highland Goatskin in the Oxford Bible that you own? I think I will order one from Allan's next time to see what theres is like.
