What are you reading now?

Speaking of bargains, Borders is having a five for the price of four sale - and it's applicable to any books (most of these sales are limited to softcovers).

 

I've been on a bit of a restrained budget recently so my book buying money has been slim(er).

I'm off for the next three days so I picked up the new Harry Potter book (~$15 at a local retailer after numerous discounts were added up). It will provide some light reading for when my mind is crowded with other books ideas.

Harry Potter? Hoo boy...

I just finished High Expectations, by Thom Rainer. It's the results of a study of nearly three hundred churches (SBC). These churches were all evangelistic, but were retaining the vast majority of new and old members. The study basically looked at the top 4% of Southern Baptist churches, and the composite results (in book form) are pretty astounding.

If you want to "close the back door", then get this book!!!!!

Concerning Pollard's Christian Modesty and the Public Undressing of America:

It's a short (about 75 pages) and to the point book on the issue of Christian modesty and how fashions have changed in regard to public decency. Pollard does a good job of presenting biblical guidelines for dressing modesty. I'd like to give a copy to the parents of all my teens at church.

I just finished reading "Star Trek Memories" by William Shatner. This was a really great read! The most interesting thing about the show was just how much they did with so little budget money. The show had a look about it that was really advanced for its time, but many of the special effects were done really cheaply yet very effectively. For example, the "transporter effect" was done by transposing a filming of aluminum powder swirling in water onto the characters while doing a fade out. It didn't cost much, but what a great special effect!

And here is one really interesting bit of "inside information": When they needed to recast the Captain's role after Jeffrey Hunter couldn't do it (he had done the pilot episode as Captain Christopher Pike, but was not available to do it when they decided to go with a second pilot and subsequent series), do you know who was originally chosen to be Captain Kirk? No, it wasn't Shatner at all. Rather, the role was originally offered to Jack Lord, who would later go on to do the show "Hawaii 5-0." But he asked for too much money and input, so they went with Shatner instead. The rest is history.
