Christian Theology by Millard Erikson

Excellent modern systematic theology.

Erickson was a student of Bernard Ramm, that makes him okay in my book.
He provides a theology that meets the tests that the modern world puts upon Christians of today.

I have read it. It was the required theology where I went to seminary. I consult it often. I find it to be very readable, understandable, and written in a conversational way.

 

Erickson is OK and has some helpful sections but think the best modern ST book out there today is Robert Reymond's, A New Systematic Theology of the Christian Faith. He may be too Reformed for some people but I find that he is a strong, conservative, defender of the faith. If I could only have one theology book, I would pick Reymond.

I get to pick more than one, though, and so another helpful set is Charles Hodge's 3-volume Systematic Theology. I would probably place Hodge above Erickson even though Hodge's is an older work.

Erickson is good. Reymond is good. Wayne Grudem is quite good, save for his dispensationalism. All three are must reads. Go back and read J.L. Dagg and James P. Boyce as well.

 

I've heard several good comments on Grudem. I must check it out.

I enjoyed Erickson's ST. It was the textbook when I took Theology 1 and 2.

I saw the other day in my CBD catalog, that erickson has now released a book refuting open theism. That would also probably be a good read.

 

I used Erickson for a theology course this spring. It's an excellent theology; very accessible, though some of the early chapters might be too technical for some. I disagree with some of his conclusions, but nothing too contentious.

 

I just found this thread. Very interesting. I"m currently workng my way through Grudem's & I think it is excellent!!! His writing is not pedantic, very accessible even to NON theologians. He also includes a very good bibliography at the end of every chapter for cross reference purposes to OTHER systematics. VERY cool! I saw Reymonds at the local store & perhaps might work my through it after Grudems.
