The best current commentary on Revelation is the two volumes by RL Thomas, put out by Moody Press. But it is pretty deep. The thing that makes it so good is that it deals with all the issues.

 

Just a quick note, jet11:

It's revelation. Just one, no plural. While I'm at it, it's also Nordstrom and Penney.

My sister in law still insists she shops at Walmart's.

 

For me the most helpful study on Revelation was "More than Conquerers" by William Hendrickson (sp?)A kind of narrative commentary rather than a linguistic word by word study.

"More than Conquerers" is an excellent book!!! My highly recommend you to order it. It explains so very simple and plain! I did read it. It is very good!

p.s. but, I urge you to read and study the book of Revelation in the Bible comes first before any books. Rev. 1:3 promises us, if any person read this book, will receive blessing. I urge you to read Revelation in the Bible.

A word of advice: don't worry about the commentaries...yet. You need to read it for what IT says, not what THEY say.

Grab two ar three different translations. A King James or New King James or New American Standard, a New International Version, and just about any other one you can find. Read them side by side, a few verses in one then the next then the next. Using the different translations is to help you understand by letting you see different facets of the text.

Read through the book slowly, maybe a couple of times. THEN you can get into the commentaries to see if ehat you got out of it is anything close to what the "authorities" come up with.

You see, by starting with commentaries, you are crippling your own ability to understand the Bible. Give yourself a little credit and try to get a handle on the basics. Revelation is a tough book, but you owe it to yourself to give it your best (note that I said YOUR best).

I learned this lesson the hard way, and it took a long tie to relearn how to read and study God's word for myself. I am speaking from experience on this. Besides, not every commentary out there is worth the paper it is printed on. So be very careful as to what you put in your head.

Pete Ruckman's BIBLE BELIEVER'S COMMENTARY ON REVELATION (not to be confused with his Pictorial commentary on Revelation, which is about 220 of his oil paintings depicting scenes and events described in the Revelation) is a refreshing change from the run of the mill commentaries so prevalent in Christian bookstores.

Dr. Ruckman originally made a cassette tape commentary, back in the 60ies, for a black preacher who didn't have much education and had great difficulty reading but wanted to study the Book of Revelation so he could preach it to his people.

The tapes were later transcribed to produce PSR's 600 page commentary.

Lots of interesting material and cross-references about the tribulation and the end times.

 

The book of Revelation contains dozens of symbols that are found elsewhere in the Old and New Testaments. Research those symbols and see their meaning in those other verses.

An example would be the "Harlot". Research the Harlot in the OT and see who or what it signifies then apply it the same way in Revelation.

There is a brand new book out,"The Consummation of the Ages" by Kurt Simmons. I have it but have not read it. It will be from the Preterist point of view. I would get one from a futurist view and one from a preterist view and have some fun.

 

I hate to say this, but I would not recommend any "relatively new Christian" try to dig right into Revelation.

First, become infatuated with the Gospel of John.
Second, work your way through the rest of the New Testament. Stay away from depending on the editor's notes in the Study Bible for a while until your faith becomes your own.
Third, read the Old Testament. When the center page references show New Testament usages, you might explore these to see how the O.T. is used in the N.T. For examaple, you will see a lot of quotations from Ezekiel and Daniel in Revelation.
Fourth, don't make any quick decisions about the meaning of Revelation. These are at lest 3 major schools of thought, plus many more offshoots from those three.
Finally, base your salvation on the plain teachings of the New Testament and not the encrypted apocalyptic teachings of Revelatiion. Be aware that Revelatiion is the fertile hatching place for many cults and hurt feelings.
Ask God's Spirit to always guide you. You will know when you are ready to go there.

Excellent point. When I started studying eschatology, I stayed away from Revelation all together. Learn all you can from the other 65 books, then take what you have learned and study Revelation.

 

jet11, Read the book of Daniel first. IMHO it is very difficult, if not impossible, to begin to understand the revelation until you've understood the prophecy found in Daniel.

 

It depends on your viewpoint. If your premill dispensationalist then the 2 volume set by Robert Thomas is the way to go - very thorough and scholarly but yet quite conservative. I personally prefer the volume by Beale - since I'm not a premill guy. I'd stay away from Clarence Larkin!

A must read if you are even considering a commentary that supports the rapture, but as a new christian I probably recommend you start your studies elsewhere understanding end time prophecy's properly requires significant knowledge of the OT and NT.

Scott Hahn's A Father who keeps His promises" is an easy read and an introduction to covenat theology.

 

Revelation is the most difficult commentary to reccommend since ones prior interpretation will bias which commentary he sees as valuable (pre-trib, post-trib, amill, etc).
