Do any of you have a favorite devotional book? What are some of the authors putting out devotional material that has a little more depth than average? Don't get me wrong. I find much of the mainstream devotional literature to be very edifying, but even in devotions, sometimes one could use some exegesis.

I suggest having a look at Scripture Union Notes. There are several choices which include interpretational devotions.

I have used Scripture Union Notes since the early fifties. I don't have the website at hand, but easy enough to find by searching for Scripture Union.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I would suggest at least two books by A.W.Pink . One is called " Profiting From The Word " . The ten chapters are " The Scriptures And ...
    Sin, God, Christ , Prayer , Good Works , Obedience , The World , The Promises , Joy , Love , .

He was a true physician of the soul . He saturated himself in the Bible . Some compare hm with Matthew Henry because of his gift of explaining the Word so well .

Another book by Pink is " Practical Christianity " . There are 13 chapters divided into three headings : The Christian's Beginning , Progress in the Christian Life , Authority in Christian Practice , and God's Best in the Christian's Life .

I have so much underlined that I should not have started to highlight any of it -- it is all solid gold . He is very instructive and encouraging . Pink is simply powerful .

Maurice Roberts was the editor of the Banner of Truth magazine in years past . A number of his editorials have been compiled . One of those compilations is called " The Thought Of God " . It is wonderful . But it is a memory , because it's one of my many books back in the States . I do have " Great God Of Wonders " though . Roberts is fantastic . He is an able man in spiritual matters . He covers the gamut . I have been so blessed in reading his articles . They are short , comforting , challenging and needed at this time . Do I have to say that he is very biblical in his treatment of themes ? The topic headings for his 30 chapters are Prayer , Living For God ,The Fellowship of the Church ,Delighting in the Character of God , Understanding God's Truth , and The Second Coming and Heaven .

A book worth having is Spurgeon's Devotional Bible, Baker Book House. It has morning and evening devotionals strictly in the scriptures, with verse by verse comment by Spurgeon.

    Cheers,

We like the "31 Days of Prayer" books. [IMG] They have a prayer request and scripture for each day of the month. Day 1 - you read Day 1. Day 2 - you briefly read Day 1 and then Day 2. And so on.
Some have commented that they are great for scripture memorization because you keep rehearsing the same Bible verses while adding a new verse each day.

Another book I highly recommend as must reading is: The Fight by Dr. John White, InterVarsity Press. It is paperback and about $8.00 US. It takes one through the fundamentals of Christianity.

The late Dr. White was a Plymouth Brethren and a psychiatrist who also taught at a college in British Columbia. I used to give this book to every new convert under my ministry.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I just discovered Scripture Union a few days ago at a Christian Retreat Center! They had the booklet "Encounter With God" for Jan-March in the room and it took only reading two days of that to convince me how good it is.

I read more and asked if I could take the book. They said yes, so I have it and am planning to order it. It's $22 a year to get this wonderful devotional booklet. It's not superficial and, in fact, they say that it's for the Christian who has "Bible background."

    Their website is:
    http://scriptureunion.gospelcom.net/index.php

They have several resources for adults and children. To get the daily devotion for "Encounter with God," click here:
    http://scriptureunion.gospelcom.net/devotional.php?devotional=encounter

You can click on that page at the top to get it by email.

Or, if you want the hard copy, go to this page to order:

Marcia, I'm glad you enjoyed Scripture Union literature. You can readily see why I have used it in personal devotions for so many years. One cannot read Scripture Union Notes and remain static in his/her Christian walk.

Cheers, and thanks for the references,

    Jim

If you have a copy of e-Sword [www.e-Sword.net a free download] there are several Devotionals available for that Software Title...

    Utmost For His highest
Day by Day by Grace - Bob Hoekstra
Our daily Walk by F.B. Meyer
Morning and Evening - C.H. Spurgeon
    Words of Christ - unknown

Right now I am going through a Praise and Worship Devotional, "Open the Eyes of my heart", that I found at the Goodwill...

In concert with the devotional I am also reading, "God at War - The Bible and Spiritual Conflict"

Every devotional will have good points and bad points...

You don't have to use a Devotional for your Devotional [IMG]

You may find that The Spirit leads you to read a particular book for your devotional to train in in a particular area...

As always I do not recommend replacing regular Bible Study and Bible Reading with a devotional...

But, each has their own convictions on that...

Scripture Union is biblical in every way. I recommend a daily devotional be used because to establishes a quiet time which then lasts a lifetime.

Reading devotional books is an extra.

As a pastor, preparing sermons and Bible studies all the time, a devotional separates Bible study from the daily rigors of the "job".

    Cheers,

    Jim

I like D.A. Carson's For the Love of God, which is more theologically oriented and less "feel-good" than most devotional books. It's designed to accompany a year-long read through the Bible.

I am currently going through "Communion With God" by John Owen. It's not strictly "devotional" but if you read about 2 - 3 pages a day it serves the purpose.

    I've got a first edition (1925)

Nice old-time devotional... perhaps it's why they call it quiet time.

I picked up Josh McDowell's Family Devotions today. (CBD - $10.99)
Looks do-able 2-4 days a week with the family.
    Pray for me  [IMG]

I am not much of devotional reader, but I am currently reading "Drawing Near" by John MacArthur. I probably read it four times a week.
