In fact, the pope and the Jesuits gave Wilhelm their blessing to expand Germany because he was a "good Roman Catholic." (Of course, Wilhelm was Lutheran; Lutheranism was the established church, and Bismarck was always tough on the the Catholics. But why bother to tell the truth at this point?)
