Ever been to outdoor camp meetings?

our church puchased a community camp graounds in 1969 for a youth camp. Since that time the camp program has evolved into a family camp program.

In the beginning we had several churches attending but through the years some have strated holding their own camps, so we have fewer churches in attendance. This is good as room was getting scarce.

In the mornings we have pastors from the attending churches teach or preach on a family related subject. In the evenings we have a featured speaker preach on a family theme. The Lord has blessed many families with this camp program.

There is one family that travels 1700 miles from Florida to attend. They are former members of our church and just can't stay away even though the Air Force saw fit to send them to the sunny south.

There is camping on the grounds, some in RVs, tents or pop ups, also we have afew cabins which are spoken for about 2 years in advance.

The fodd is great both physically and spiritually.\\

When I was a little girl, several local churchs would hold a camp meeting at the local fair grounds every year. It was held in a large tent with a sawdust on the ground. Being a child, I hated having to sit still and listen to a serman outdoors (LOL). I remember there were no 'running' bathrooms and if you had to go, you had to use the 'porto-potties' - yuk!

Over the years, the camp meetings moved into a building on the other side of town. I miss going to the camp meetings. I wish some of the local churches in Columbia would have one.

 

Altho' I've already mentioned the old-time camp meeting we attended the first of June, it's fun to talk about it again...Old Paths Bapt. Church hosted their 2nd camp-meet & their 'facilities' is a pole-barn which sits on a 50acre hayfield. They are famous for real "outhouses" (his & hers). Now these are fancy ones, complete with a nice rug, toilet seat, & this year they installed electric lights, instead of the candles. The pole-barn was extended to accommadate extra seating. It was open-air on both sides & the benches were planks laid across cinder-blocks. No air-conditioning, no padded pews, no fluff, no chandeliers(lighting was with security lights) & it was pure Heaven. We brought our tents & discovered that tents don't float after the monsoons hit; but the Lord was good & provided us with plenty of clothesline aka barbedwire. .

Like I said in another post, the singing was sweet(2doz. young people playing fiddles/violins, mandolins, guitars, banjos, etc-but NO drums!), the preaching was hot, the food & fellowship were fantastic & the Believer's Banner(Confed.flag) added decor. I hope to be able to go again in Nov. They decided since everyone had such a great time, we need at least two a year-kinda like a bootcamp, of sorts.

 

We just finished this year's family camp. The mosquitos were very happy to have so much food to feast on. LOL In spite of the mosquitos we had a great camp with families being strenthened, spiritual victories in individual lives, and good strong preaching which challenged us and convicted of things that needed to be changed in our lives.

I've never been to a camp meeting. Hearing my preacher talk about it, I wonder if I've missed something by not being a part fo one.
I hear talk of how the Lord was moving, lot's of people getting saved, old fashioned preaching and singing, and fellowship. Makes me kinda sad.
But I wouldn't trade anything for my home church. We may be small, but we are a close knit family. I love them all so much. Witch reminds me -I can't wait to get back tonight! Praise the Lord! God is good isn't He?

Some of my most vivd memories as a child are those of my family attending the Cowboy Camp Meeting just outside of Kerrville when we went to Mountain Home, Texas on vacation.

I learned, and remember still to this day all the words to "His Name is Wonderful" from attending those meetings.

 

I don't necessarily care for the camp meetings, but I loved Falls Creek. What a camp meeting!!

 

Personally, rsr, I think it is a great idea what they are doing or wanting to do.

I grew up going to Falls Creek, and have very very very fond memories of the old.

But, I have since been to "other" camps, and am all for the changes, knowing how the other camps have benefitted me, too.

I love what ropes courses do, as well as an a/c'ed worship area.

I sweated through I don't know how many Falls Creek services (and loved every minute), but give me AC any day.

The thing about BB McKinney Chapel, I always enjoyed watching the bsll games, and the guys hitting the balls onto the roof, then watching the balls come down.
