I am from Oklahoma, and when we "go to the lake", we go to the LAKE. But in NC, everyone goes to the beach.

Does anyone go to the lake anymore? I miss it. I got a pass to Chimney Rock near Lake Lure. I look forward to using it in the next year.

Saggy, isn't Lake Norman pretty close to where you are? I believe it is a pretty big lake.

I think I was spoiled when Lake Texoma was in my backyard, and it was only 10 minutes to several spots on the lake. If that far.

We "go to the lake" here in Ohio. The closest one is Indian Lake which is close to an hour away from us. My father-in-law passed on last July so things are different this year: however, up until then they had an RV/camper on a lot across from the lake. We would go fishin' on his pontoon boat. Not to mention having a bonfire, s'mores, cookouts, etc. LOTS of fun. It's been too soon and too many memories right now for the family to go back there right now. But in the future I would look forward to carrying on the tradition. It's nice to have a place to get away from it all.

    Hey, Saggy:

I don't like to "go to the lake" because on the weekends it's too crowded and tends to draw drinkers. I don't mind if they drink at home, but if I want to be around people who are loud and abusive, I'll just go to work. ;)

But there are plenty of good lakes besides Texoma. There's Lake Murray, the Lake of the Arbuckles, Tom Steed, Altus-Lugart (with the very pretty Quartz Mountains), Lake Thunderbird, all within easy driving distance, not to mention all the small lakes at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Reufge, and the city lakes of Lawton and Duncan. (Lake Lawtonka, although it has no shade, has postcard views of Mount Scott.)

I prefer Chickasaw National Recreation Area, which attracts more of a family crowd.

I have been to most of those lakes.

I cannot fathom, though, what Lake Lawtonka would look like. ROFLOL.

Pathetic mudholes and brown backwaters passed for lakes in Texas. We NEVER went to one (although some looked like they were so thick you could get hurt diving into the debris.

Growing up in Minnesota and pastoring 20 years in Wisconsin . . . well, enough said. Can see the envy in your eyes already.

And Ohio doesn't even have a natural lake within its borders. Thankfully, nobody has set fire to Lake Erie yet, so they can go SOMEWHERE to swim. Kinda.

    Dr. Bob:

I can testify to the "pathetic mudholes" in Texas. A few years ago I took a Boy Scout troop to a lake in Texas in August (this is a recurring theme of my camping experiences, BTW) and found the experience similar to taking a warm bath. After I got back, I read a story about child who had swum there and contracted meningitis. Ugh.

But feel free to come to Oklahoma, which has lots of nice lakes -- all of them man made. That's what Texans do when they want to go to a real lake. ;)

Alabama Power has blessed us with a whole series of lakes. Our house is on Logan Martin Lake. Nice lake for watersports, just don't eat the fish. Monsanto has been sued for polluting it with PCB's. I managed to purchase my house a couple of months after the date on which all current homeowners would be sent a settlement check. I like to cruise arund on our jetski and swim with the puppy. She loves the water.

You can't walk 5 miles in any direction, anywhere in New England without walking into a lake.

But the hidden lakes of the Adirondaks are the most beautiful around here.

In Nevada, there is a huge lake, about 3 hours south of Reno, called Walker Lake, up in the mountains. If you can get there to see it, do it.

    Hey Saggy:

Just got back from a couple of days at Chickasaw: The temperatures were in the low 90s and the water was a refreshing 68 degrees. Ah, summer in Oklahoma.

I was just up at a lake here in NC this weekend, too. Lake Lure, it was. Actually, I didn't spend much time in the lake, but I did wade in a river near it.
