Dog lovers

HI!

We have three dogs.

Sam (the marshmallow) is half wolf and half German shepherd and a throwback to before sin, I think! He is sweet and very affectionate. He also spends at least 90% of his metabolism growing hair to shed the next day. Our retarded son, who is now taller than I am, will trip over him or try to unscrew his tail.... and old Sam looks at me as if to say, "So all this is part of life, too, right?"

Tasha is a mostly-Sheltie. Beautiful, but my oldest son is right when he claims she has only one brain cell and it alternates between barking and eating! She is getting gray around the muzzle now, though, at about 13, and is calming way down most of the time.

And then there's King. Five months old today. 1/2 Shepherd and 1/2 Lab, he looks very shepherd except for floppy ears -- has Shepherd black and tan coloring. Easily the most intelligent dog we have ever had, very alert, and thinks phone books are fantastic for chewing into four million little pieces. Better that than furniture while he is teething, however! Very people oriented and extraordinarily easily trained. He knows the leash is for business now, and heels, sits, stays, comes and drops whatever he has in his mouth on command. That last one is a biggie! He is totally curious and walks off with all kinds of things.

King is grabbing a piece of my heart, but no one will replace Sam. Sam is not as old as Tasha but is definitely on the way out. He is very arthritic now and simply seeks out my company most days. Sometimes he will look at me so earnestly and start 'talking.' I had heard of this kind of thing before but never heard or seen it with all the dogs through all the years until Sam.

Tasha is the one who has unbent from her old age enough to play with the pup. He has really given her a bit of a second childhood.

Yeah, I'm a dog person!

 

I love dogs and cats! But we only have one little dog, a Chihuahua, his name is Jeter, named after, of course, Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees. He have only had him for 2 years, he used to be our daughter's dog. She was expecting her first child and felt she couldn't give enough of her time to him too. And I agree, he is a very clinging little dog! But he gets along great with our cats, 3, he believes he is their protector. He is white with black spots. Everyone should have a pet of some kind, they just make you feel good, it's nice to come home and that little dog is so happy to see you! With cats, they are glad you are home because their food bowl is close to empty.

I love cats and dogs too! I have a Chihuahua (like SuekieLyn) named Micah (and yes he gets his name from the smallest book in the Old Testament) and two cats named Nugget and Sweetie. We've only had Micah for a month but he's 2.5 years old. Sometimes he's a little intimidated by my cats. Nugget, at 15 lbs, can be a little intimidating and Sweetie, only being a year old, likes to try to play with Micah by chasing him around the house. It's a hoot watching them play.

Helen... your shephard mix named King reminds me of the shephard mix named King that I had when I was a little girl. If I ever get another shephard, I'll probably name him King too!

Dogs AND cats for me! My apartment building doesn't allow dogs, or I'd have one. My favorites are bassett hounds. I've had three in my life, and when I have a home with a yard and a job that will allow me to come home in the middle of the day to take care of it, you can bet I'll be bringing home a bassett. When I finally buy a house (okay, condo or townhouse), I'll probably bring home a dog, but a smaller, amenable to indoor living kind of dog.

No matter who else comes along, though, they'll have to get along with my cat, Clio.

 

We have two dogs.
1. A Boxer named Raven that stays outside. She is beautiful and friendly and playful. She is colored all black except for her paws which are brendled.
2. Silky Terrier named Gizmo that stays inside. He is full of it and he thinks he is the boss. He only weighs five pounds.
Question: Does anyone know how silky terriers are with kids / babies? Since Gizmo stays inside, we are not sure if we are going to have any problems regarding that. Any suggestions as to how to introduce them?
Anyways, I just wanted to take part in the dog lovers chat because I love both of my dogs!! Dogs are wonderful!

 

I "inherited" all my animals! An over-the-hill housecat, named Dee! A dalmation named Liddie; an enchilada-dog called Paco. Tons of outside cats(too many to name here, but most do have one). And a guinea-hen and goose, who wandered across from da bayou.

 

I have two dogs, and one cat. My dogs are Seebre, the lhasha apso. This is one spoiled dog. Actually, she loves my mom, and fights my sister. The only person she doesn't like is my sister, so there is a "rank struggle" between them. Max is our beagle. He is such an affectionate, sweet dog...around us. But, let a strange man come around, and Max will bite. He's just very protective, which is a good thing to have out where we live. Tigger is my "baby". He's a little cat who is 2 years old. He thinks he's a puppy, and we aren't telling him any different.

 

We have 6 dogs.

Snowball is an 8-year old Miniature Poodle. We bought him for my mother after my dad died. Then she moved into a senior center when he was 14 months old and we got him.

Ben is a Treeing Walker Coonhound of unknown age. He was a stray that had been lost for several months and wandered into our front yard in April 1999. We found the owners through a newspaper ad after about a week but they did not have room for him as they had moved from the country into town. So we got to keep him. He had bad ear infections, a bad tooth that had to be removed, and heartworms, but is in great shape now.

Dream(registered name: Sherri's Still Dreamin') is a 7-year old tri-color Sheltie. She was rescued by a breeder we know - Dream was tied up to a tree with two other dogs when the breeder got her. She needed a home so we got her a little over two years ago. She had a double hernia that needed to be repaired. She was terribly shy at first and was with us a month before she even barked. But she is a happy dog now.

Ossum(registered name: Mill Creek's Ossum Luck) is a 5 year old sable and white Sheltie. The breeder we know used him as her stud dog and sold him to us in January 2001. He is a show quality dog but was not producing show quality puppies. We went through 3 obedience classes and he obtained his American Kennel Club(AKC) Companion Dog(CD) title this past March(so he now has CD after his registered name). We are now learning how to compete in agility. He is the only one of dogs that is not neutered or spayed.

Gracie(registered name: Ossum's Gracious Light) is a 17-month old daughter of Ossum from the last litter he produced before we bought him. She is the only dog we have that we planned on getting even before she was born. We are working on trying to get her CD title like her papa Ossum. We are going to an obedience match(kinda like a practice trial) tomorrow. Her main area will be in agility and we hope to start her training in agility this winter. She is well-built for agility - light-boned and fast - so I hope she will do extremely well in it.

Dakota(registered name: Snow Isle Eureka in Benton) is a 15-month old blue merle colorheaded white Sheltie. I was at a dog show in Benton, Arkansas right after Thanksgiving Day last year and just before I left, a woman had some puppies in a pen. The breeder I have mentioned was there and had gotten a dog from this woman, and mentioned how Dakota would be great for obedience and agility and I simply fell in love with him, bought him and brought him home. He is our smartest dog and, don't tell the others, the cutest. Unfortunately, he has a really bad shyness problem(as some Shelties do) when we take him away from home or he is introduced to something new. I would love to see him in the obedience or agility ring but we'll have to overcome this problem first. But even if we don't, he is a great pal for Gracie and they simply love each other and play, play, play.

Our dog, Maggie, is a collie-shepard mix, and she is the baby of the house. My dad sits on the back porch and eats ginger snaps with her. She has a stuffed animal that she thinks is her baby, sometimes while we watch tv, she grooms it and makes little sounds like she's talking to it. She gets pretty annoyed when my mom throws it in the washing machine - and when it comes out of the dryer, she grabs it and ducks her head down and runs away with it as if she rescued it from my mom. She hates baths, so we used to spell b-a-t-h, but now she runs away if she hears us spell any word at all, she must think they all mean "bath"...lol. She tries to protect my mom from the vacuum cleaner, she jumps between them and growls, and my mom gets mad and puts her out on the porch. Poor Maggie, just trying to do her job.

 

We have two dogs, puppies actually. There is Lucky, who we found on the side of the road about a year ago. He was so tiny (3 pounds) and now he is a big hunk, over 60 pounds! We think he is a pointer but maybe some australian sheperd and/or blue heeler in him..... He is a nut! Very energetic and LOVES HIS TENNIS BALLS. Seriously, he LIVES to catch a ball, and never gets tired of it!
Whitney is our little princess, she was born February 11 this year which makes her just over 6 months old. She is a purebred Black Labrador and a very sweet dog. She is HUGE! (probably be 90-100 pounds by the time she is done growing) She lives to eat! Its so funny, she snorts and gurgles when she eats, and she snores! She will lick ya from ear to ear while making a slobbering grunting sound , it is too funny.
I adore both my dogs so much, and I love my cat too! She adopted us several years ago, we call her simply Gray Kitty, or Gray for short. Can you guess what she looks like?
We also have 2 goldfish, Spot and Rose.

I had Gretchen, a Great-Dane/Rottweiller. 115 lbs of dog. A beauty, too. Very affectionate, friendly, and super gentle when Ashley was born. And jet-black. When she got older, she got a little grey in her beard. I could put Ashley in her car seat, put her in the front seat of the truck, and ole' Gretchen would jump in and somehow avoid stepping on her. And if Ashley was sleeping, and I needed to go into a store, Gretchen would assume a pose that you wouldn't believe. I knew she would lay her life down protecting my daughter, or take anyone elses, you could tell just by how she sat in the truck. Her teeth, though I never saw them used in anger, were about an inch long. And to see her run full tilt, you saw something awesome. She could put her front paws on my shoulder, and kiss me in the face. She did have a nasty habit of killing squirrels, the poor little rodents never knew what hit 'em.

Big dogs have shorter lives. At 10, she had a stroke that she never fully recovered from, and soon we had to put her down. I was pretty bummed. I got a lot of pictures of her, and Ashley has a good memory of her. But it will be hard for me to get another dog, when I know I already had the best one ever.
