The difference between William Shatner and Patrick Stewart is, well, Mr Stewart can act.

And act he does. I saw the movie for the first time Friday at 5:30 pt, with a group of old college buddies.

The flick was good. Not great, but definitely good. More cerebral than typical sci-fi. Lots of talking (though less technobabble than in the mast). I'd give it 3.5 stars out of 5.

It was the #2 movie this week, but I expect it to drop after the upcoming LOTR debuts.

Seeing Weskey Crusher and Guinan again was heartwarming, albeit for too brief a moment. Oh, don't forget to bring a tissue.

Hey, he was there for seven years and managed to keep from being sent to Viet Nam. He must've had something going for him.

I plan on seeing it I just don't know when. My wife dosn't attend movies, and I havn't quite convinced my son that Star Trek is as good as Star Wars. If I can't convince him to go I'll just have to wait til it comes out on DVD.

It seems that the even numbered ST movies are good and the odd are not so good. That means Nemesis should be good.

    1. Star Trek The Motion Picture. - Really Bad

    2. ST: The Wrath of Kahn - Good

    3. ST: The Search for Spock - Bad

    4. ST: The Voyage Home - Good

    5. ST: The Final Frontier - Really Bad

    6. ST: The Undiscovered Country - Good

    7. ST: Generations - Bad

    8. ST: First Contact - Good

    9. ST: Insurection - Bad, but one of the better bad ones.

    10. ST: Nemesis - ????

I wouldn't call ST:The Motionless Picture bad, just not very good. BTW - the director's edition on DVD is worth owning.

I wouldn't call ST3 bad either. I'd call it adequate.

ST5 explains why one person in the poll believes that ST is spawn of Satan.

I liked Generations very much. It made my then-wife cry.

    Insurrection, not bad, just adequate.

Nemesis, good. Not great, but good, and defenitely worth seeing. Bring a tissue, btw.

A tissue? Really? An ST movie with sap?!?

As for Wesley Crusher, is he still played by Wil Wheaton? If so . . . ugh. Unless he's become a less annoying actor.

Yes, he's briefly in the first few minutes of the film. But he has no lines. He's sitting next to his mother (Dr Crusher).

I understand he had a scene with dialogue, but it was cut to get the length of the film down. Also, Whoopi Goldberg's dialogue was trimmed extensively. SO was some of Whorf's dialogue when he's complaining of a hangover. Oops, TMI!!

The tissue is not needed for sap, it's needed for sadness. And to quote Forrest Gump, "That's all I have to say about that".

I always wanted them to put Wesley in one of those "bad luck" red security shirts and beam him back to the Original Series. He would't last until the opening credits! [IMG] :D

No, I love it..."Make it sew" how cute is that?

You know what I find interesting...the people that I usually agree with on other topics are the same ones who like Star Trek.I love Star Trek in every form.

Did I ever mention that when my husband and I were dating, our Wednesday night was T.V. night...he would come over and we would watch Star Trek Next Generation. It has a personal significance with us.

I really want to see it, haven't seen the new James Bond either...want to see that too, and the new Lord of the Rings. I haven't been to the movies in awhile. My church is against movies...it's one of the things they are against that I have a problem with.

Oh by the way... I loved Star Trek 5...it was more like the original series. And I liked Generations too...but not quite as much. First contact....brilliant...and thoroughly enjoyable.

The series Voyager sure was short lived wasn't it?

The new one, Enterprise? I like it, although I think I like the intro the best....Captain Archer... reminds me of another sci-fi show I used to watch...Quantum Leap. I'm a sap for a good looking man... but then Captain Picard is my favorite...."make it so" I love that.

Voyager went seven seasons, so I wouldn't call it "short lived", especially since there's a brief cameo from one of the Voyager folks in ST-X.

Yeah, Captain Archer looks exactly like that Quantum Leap guy. hmmm.... wonder why.... could it be that they're the.... same person????

Seriously, I've always liked Scott Bakula. I think he's a great actor. I liked his performance in American Beauty (which I will say I categorically found distasteful and don't have on DVD on sale from Blockbuster Video for $12.99). I think he's been underrated as an actor, and hope that his role as Capt Archer puts him in the forefront.

btw - I've got my LOTR tix for 7:20 this evening [IMG]

It's something about the accent. That must be it. ;) But whatever they say about bald men not being . . . well, anyway. Patrick Stewart is an excellent actor (anyone seen him in I, Claudius?), and definitely not hard to look at.

Scott Bakula, well . . . I don't get (and didn't get) the station Enterprise is aired on, unfortunately, but I did watch almost every episode of "Quantum Leap." He is underrated as an actor, and I don't know whether it's because of the films he's done (although I've seen American Beauty, and can't say I remember his character), or that the new show he starred in (that would be Enterprise ) wasn't on one of the big stations, or what.

It's true, Star Trek isn't the best of science fiction (particularly on the science end of it, and in what world do your highest ranking officers on any ship get to go out and have all the adventures?), but it's the stories that are so good. And, for whatever reason, fans are, and always have been, loyal. I think a lot of it has to do with the characterization. A lot of science fiction focuses too much on the action and science and not enough on the characters and story.

I will say that I get irked when I hear someone say they're big science fiction fans and then name Star Trek or Star Wars as the only series they've read (or watched).

John...about Scott Bakula...in a word "duh!" I was being sarcastic... I know it's the same actor.Voyager was 7 seasons?... it seemed more like 3...why is that? How was the movie by the way?

Kelly, Scott Bakula wasn't in Voyager...they had a female captain. He's in the new Start Trek called Enterprise. I didn't see American Beauty, I don't like "dark" movies... I go to the movies to feel good, not...well, whatever those type of movies make me feel...disturbed?

And yes I agree Patrick Stewart's voice is what does it for me too...not just the accent but the depth...my husband used to kid me about likeing him...he jokingly referred to him as "your boyfriend" But then I have a thing for men with little hair... I feel the same way about Ed Harris and Sean Connery...but I don't think it's the hair...it's their take charge, honorable, and manly aire... The same qualities I adore about my husband...and he still has most of his hair. ;)

D'oh! That's what I meant! Voyager was Captain Janeway, was it not?

    Ed Harris . . . yup.

Okay, this is turning into a good looking guy gabfest! [IMG]

    I know...don't get me started...

Captain Janeway...who was the actress that played her? Her name escapes me.

John, John, you seem to know everything...what's Captian Janeway's name.

It's going to drive me nuts... I can just tell. [IMG]

Voyager was a joke. Species what ever number can blow up a cube, but only scratches Voyager? Hello!!!

The writers just made way too many inconsistancies. My wife would get mad at me when I'd point them out. "I know!!!" was her reply.

Deep Space 9, now that was a good series!

Of the various Star Trek series I have to say I like the Original and Next Generation the best. Both of these had mainly self contained adventures. DS9 and Voyager did this for their first two or three season then they became more like serials and if you missed an episode or two you were lost. I have only seen two or three episodes of Enterprise so I don't have much of an opinion on it.

Kate Mulgrew...bless you John for remembering... I used to know her name.

Deep Space 9...I liked that show when it was on... I also liked Babylon 5...not Star Trek, but a sci-fi show that seemed well done to me...unfortunately it ended without resolving the final questions...I hate that!

I found the first movie extremely boring... I also figured out the true identity of V'ger within a few minutes of hearing the name. They stole the premise from an episode in the original series. Very dull... The director's edition was much better, but it still didn't save the movie. There was way too much time spent on the reunion aspect of the movie and not much time on the plot -- what plot there was. It seemed to be an excuse to show off a bunch of special effects.

I actually liked ST3. It had a very human plot about recovery, healing and loyalty. I think it is underrated.

ST5 is so bad I've only seen it once all the way through and only pieces of it here and there when it's on television. I can't stand to watch it for long.

Generations wasn't bad, but it had some major problems that made it had for me to stomach.

    It was okay.

I saw it last night and was extremely disappointed. I heard it wasn't that great, but I settled in for a relaxing evening with low expectations. Unfortunately, my expectations weren't low enough. While I'm not going to reveal any plot elements, I found the action sequences to be uninspiring since they didn't really seem to relate well to the core dramatic plot of the story, and the pace of the dramatic plot was so slow (and the bad guy's motivations were so muddled), that I ceased to care. The bad guy was essentially all bad and didn't seem to have any redeeming elements to him (which makes for a more interesting, unpredictable and realistic character.

As for the tissue scene, I think the writer(s) cheated because they have a ready-made and obvious solution for the next movie. There is little sense of gain or loss for me.

Honestly, there was more human drama and excitement in many of the two or three part season cliff-hanger episodes in the original television version of Next Generation.

If you are a Star Trek fan, you need to see the movie to keep up with the series, but if you don't really follow Star Trek, then the movie is not for you.
