Gateway appears to have some monster cameras for the money. I can't vouch for them, but the specs look good. You can get a 3X, 4-megapixel camera for about $250.

    GATEWAY CAMERAS

For twice the money, Kodak offers a 4-megapixel camera with an incredible 10X zoom.

    KODAK CAMERAS

Nikon, Fuji, Olympus and other also make good cameras. You can get some reviews by going to cnet.com.

(I've used four models of Kodaks, an HP and a Vivitar, not to mention that old Apple cam. For work I currently use a Kodak 4800, a 3-megapixel model that can produce 8x10 quality prints. Its only weakness is that the shutter speed tends to get a bit slow in difficult lighting situations.)

for a digital under five hundred look at the olympus c 4000 it is still the top rated by PC mag, it is however a 4 meg but it has very high quality by review. also this camera will allow higher lens adaptions and other accessories. look on ebay for better prices but beware of grey market items.

I have a Kodak 2.0 mega CX digital and I really like the ease of use. But I also have a question. What is the difference between the Kodak CX and DX? I likes the DX 5.0 and the features on that.
    But is there any difference?

We bought an Olympus D-380 2.0 megapixel with 5X zoom about a year ago for under $200.00. But with technology the way it is maybe someone else could give better suggestions. But we are very pleased with ours.

Among other things, the DX has better lenses and has audio recording capability in addition to a video recording function.

    Hi!!!
Our digital is a Sony Mavica.....it uses the mini CDs. We have some friends who have a Sony Mavica digital that uses a floppy disc, it takes video, too.

    Gayla [IMG] [IMG]
my Mother-in-Law bought the one we have and decided she liked her older digital that uses floppy better and gave it to us . .

OK, stupid, extremely basic questions, but inquiring minds want to know!! [IMG]

I am shopping for a digital camera. Is the megapixel rating sorta the same as resolution? Is there a huge difference in 2, 3 or 4 megapixels?

What about batteries? Do I look for one with a rechargeable battery or one that uses regular batteries?

I understand I would need a memory card. Do they come with one? And if so, do I need more memory than what they come with?

I'm not a huge photography buff...I just want a "no frills" digital camera that I can take pictures with and save on my hard drive. (Buying film, and having it developed seems so "low tech"!! :D )

Like I said...a few "basic" questions!!

    Thanks...CJ

I am shopping for a digital camera. Is the megapixel rating sorta the same as resolution?

More or less — it determines how large you can make the photos without having the pixels become obvious.

Is there a huge difference in 2, 3 or 4 megapixels?

It depends on what you want to do with the images. If you only want snapshots or 5x7s, a 2-MP camera can work. A 3-MP can give you 8x10 or larger. (Of course, bigger is better; a large MP count allows you to crop a small area to a large photo without having your pixels blow out.)

What about batteries? Do I look for one with a rechargeable battery or one that uses regular batteries?

Digital cameras are notorious battery eaters, especially if you use the LCD frequently to focus or review. If you're shooting a lot, alkalines work fine. Rechargeable nickel-hydride batteries work well, although they're more expensive than the regular kind (don't even think of using the regular rechargeables unless you're carrying spares.)

Some use special lithium batteries which, although expensive, can shoot hundreds of frames without failing.

I also use one Kodak that has a special rechargeable battery that charges while in the camera. It was expensive, but I have shot thousands of photos without ever losing power.

I understand I would need a memory card. Do they come with one? And if so, do I need more memory than what they come with?

You may get a memory card, but you might not consider it adequate. I would recommend at least a 64-meg card, and 128-meg cards are very economical now. The larger the number of pixels, the larger the card you need.

(If you're going to use it extensively, a USB card reader is a good choice: They're also economical and they make downloading faster. In addition, they reduce battery usage.)

FWIW, I consider a 2-or-3-meg camera satisfactory for general use. (I bought a 2-meg model for my daughter, and at work we are happy with 2s and 3s; in fact, we ordered a 3-meg model this week to replace one that met an unfortunate end.)

There are other things to consider, such as color balance, flash coverage, ease of use and zoom lenses. (Zooms are good, but make sure it's an optical zoom.)

A good place to start looking is with online reviews, such as:

    http://www.dcresource.com/

    http://reviews.cnet.com/Digital_cameras/2001-6501_7-0.html?tag=glnav

All this is from my experience, so your mileage may vary.
