at the risk of sounding politically incorrect, have you ever experienced culture shock while travelling around?

For me, it was probably being greeted by kisses on the cheek by strangers at my aunt's home in Belgium.

I've heard lots of stories from missionaries to places like Indonesia, Cambodia and Nepal, but i'll leave that for later. [IMG]

Anyone heard about public toilets in China?

Toilets in GENERAL in China are "interesting". We were there in 1995 and wife found out that modesty (and pantyhose) go out the window! I was thankful, again, for being a male!

Yet in our hotel we had the largest hotel room with the best western facilities I've ever been at. We did stay in Beijing and commute daily to other cities (and always back to our hotel).

Not necessarily in a negative way. But, it took me awhile to get used to Ukraine and Poland. But, then, I like challenges like that.

One story about Cow worship in Nepal. They worship it to the point that the dung is also holy. There was one missionary there who bought a small tub of yogurt off a street stall and realized only at the end that the bottom was packed with a layer of IT.

FOr me, that would take abit of "coping with". ;)

i think they do that on purpose for western guests so that you go back telling everyone how mordernized China is... [IMG]

Reminds me of the toilets in Taiwan; you don't SIT on them, you SQUAT over them. The seat was actually floor level :D

yup, it's called a squatting toilet. And it's found pretty commonly in the east. It's like a pan that can flush too.

In Singapore too. In fact, i rather prefer it. then you don't have to sit on dirty toilet seats, see... In most of our public toilets, you get a choice of sitting or squatting ones. [IMG]

However, in countries like Indonesia, the rural parts, you have those squatting types that DON"T flush.
They empty the bucket occasionally. Flies and the accompanying maggots. (Grossed out yet?) I've never gone to one of those before. i think i'd rather HOLD.

There's a lady in our church who went to do mission work in Indonesia. And the toilet was such and she just constipated five days. No joke.

They did visitation to a family's home. they had been coming to church. And the made their special meal for their guests. Monkey.

The man of the house went off into the forested area behind their house and returned with a dead monkey, and they cooked it. And this lady (the one from my church) just had to discreetly leave the room, straight after she saw that human like hand sticking out of the pot.

THis is a real dilemma for missionaries because you do not want to offend people for whom Christ died! Well, Paul said:

1 Corinthians 10:26 For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.

1 Corinthians 10:31-33 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

1 Corinthians 9:22 To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

    toilets.

The fact that I couldn't just "go". I am a single, independant woman, and for safety reasons, had to be careful.

    No AC

    No ice.

    Walking all the time.

    Couldn't hop in my car.

Went to a church in LA (Lower Alabama) that invited us to stay for a choir lunch after the service. Jordan was about 2. An older lady wanted to hold. She was feeding him with the same fork she was eating with. We had no idea who this person was. I'm not sure it would have made any difference.

Took an overnight train from Vilnius, Lithuania east to Moscow. Toil was a kick plate covering a hole in the floor and a slop sink nearby. Whole pullman car used that "facility".

Now I traveled on trains in the US in the 50's and when you "flushed" it went down on the track. Signs said not to "flush" in a station! But that was still light years ahead of Russian transit.

Most of the men were accurate to a point, but . .

It was the women that we felt most sorry for.

Yes, and i can imagine during winter and all those layers of clothing you have to wear, it can be most distressing....

the first winter i ever exprienced was in Shanghai, 2002. Winter is a bit of a culture shock for me. It doesn;t snow in Shanghai (I'd love to give snow a try sometime...) but it does get quite chilly.

I was not used to all the layers of clothing. Not only that, we had our then 3 yr old and 1 yr old with us. I was so worried we'd forget a mit or a hat when ever we left the indoors for the outdoors.

Before leaving for Shanghai, i had a conversation with a brother from church about (you guessed it) the public toilets. and what he described to me left me worrying in the middle of the night.

(CAUTION. THE FOLLOWING MATERIAL IS NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED.)

It's like a row of cubicles, a drain running through all of them and a hole at the end of the row. (Shiver me timbers....)once in a while, the cleaning person will use a bucket and flush out the stuff from the opposite end, down to the end where the drainage hole is.

Now, THAT is the low down on pubic toilets in China. And this brother was in Shanghai, one of the more (most?) prosperous city in China. Of course, the city area is very, very progressive.

China is presently trying to mordernize their toilets in Beijing in time for the 2008 olympics.

Have you ever walked into a Ukrainian public bathroom? It is all there all around the hole in the ground.

I remember something else about the Chinese in Shanghai. They have no concept of queuing. You could be standing there and they'd just shove you away to get their ticket or cab, or whatever you may have been (stupidly) standing in line for....

And, they do not wait for you while getting on or off the train or bus. The men will shove past you even if you were a lady carrying a baby!!!
    True personal account.

Worse toilet situation was in a little area north of Jericho as rest stop for tourist. Open air. Had a 5.5 foot wall with urinal trough and couple stools on one side (for men, duh) and stools on other side for women. No stalls, etc.

As men stood to relieve themselves, most Americans (much taller than palestinians) looked straight ahead . . and right over the wall to the ladies.

A couple of us with weak bladders (us, you read, included ME) rushed to the toilet only to find this most awkward. Finally took a couple of lap blankets from the mini-bus to help partition it.

And men went quickly, then left the area completely so women could have a semblance of privacy.

    Different cultures . . .

My story's not that bad, but embarrasing to say the least.

I was at a youth week in Seirville (sp), TN. We had 1200 students there. It was held at an all boys school. The boys were off for the summer. The bathrooms were open stalled, 9 or 10 toiliets in a row. You went right there in front of God and everyone else.

I left a bible study session to go. Knowing the bathroom situation, I walked up 3 flights of stairs and went to the very last bathroom at the end of the hall.

No sooner upon my arrival, did I hear some snickering. Some kids (boys and girls) had wandered off and were roaming the halls. They were going room to room, checking each one out.

I said, "please Lord, don't let them come in here." It was too late, they were on their way. All I could think of doing was cough. They stop and whispered, "someone's in here!" and went giggling down the hallway.

That kind of stuff is only suppose to happen in dreams.

Ummmm....I had to use the restrooms in Canada a number of times.
They were really clean and neat, and smelled nice.
Guess it was a bit of a shock, compared to our public restrooms.
    LOL
Yep, that's my big story! [IMG]
