    Going to Boston during October to see the leaves. Any suggestions as to what else to see and do? Places to eat? Places to stay?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

    No Name Restaurant on the wharf. Some great seafood.

    North Church is a nice 5 minute stop, if you can find a parking place within a mile! And sadly Bunker Hill is not worth it. Rather than preserving land, the area grew up all around and you cannot get a glimpse of history there.

    I'd recommend getting OUT of Bawston and into the countryside. Maybe live deliberately and stop at Walden Pond . . . and suck the marrow out of life! [​IMG]

    Boston is a great place. My family and I visited there 3 summers ago. There are too many good places to name....have fun!

    I would also recommend if you have time going up to Maine for a day. It is beautiful! We went to Ogunquit Beach for the day and it was by far my favorite place on our trip.

    I spend once some hours at
    Lowell's National Historical Park
    Very interresting.
    There is also a great Quilt Exhibition in Lowell

    anyway Boston is great! I love that city

    Yes Fenway is a must!

    The friends we visited in Boston have season tickets, and I was looking forward to seeing a game there, but sadly Boston was on the road while we were there :(

    Maybe next visit.

    There are a few trees just starting to turn here (40 miles west of Boston). It is a bit early, but it should work out well for you during October. You might investigate the Duck Tours if you haven't already. There is a fleet of restored army "duck" vehicles that have a tour route around the city and actually enter the harbor as part of the tour. As suggested, Maine is a great option, too. I suggest that you forego trying to travel to Cape Cod if possible. Traffic backups are horrendous lately as they are working on the bridges that cross the canal. It's going to be bad for a while. I hope you all have a great visit to Boston-- we'll leave the light on for you.

    I found a great hotel deal in Peabody, which is about 10 miles north of the city. Staying downtown by the Wharf was running about $350/night plus taxes and parking charges.

    We only have a few days up there, so we may want to spend only one day in the city anyway. We hope to visit the country side the rest of the time -- maybe head up to New Hampshire.

    I've heard good things about the duck tours. Do we need to make advance reservations, or just be there at a certain time?

    I think that advance reservations are suggested, but not absolutely necessary (famous last words). If you do a Google search:
    "Massachusetts Boston Duck Tours" - there are a number of sites that are listed re the tours.
    I checked out www.allbostontours.com . They also list other tour opportunities. Hope this is helpfull.

    If you are into walking, and if you are into history, then you should check out The Freedom Trail. Read more about it here. They offer tours but you can just walk it yourself. We had half a day and only did the first half of the tour, but it was fantastic. You'll walk through a neighborhood with about a hundred little Italian restaurants, and I'd bet that any of them would be worth trying out. There are plenty of other meal along the trail too. If I only had a day or so, and if the Sox were not playing, I'd do the Freedom Trail.

    My family and I did the freedom trail while in Boston and it was a nice adventure. If there is time and you don't mind walking, I would recommend it. And while on the trail you will see many of the famous duck tour vehicles go by quacking at you.

    My dh and I were there on Oct. a few years ago. We stayed in Rhode Island and rented a car. But for Boston we took a bus from Newport and then took a Grayline tour once we got into Boston. It was great. We didn't have to drive. The "Big Dig" was going on and the road construction was horrible. But our bus driver didn't seem to mind at all. He was very entertaining.

    I gree with Dr Bob - the no name is great as is The Daily Catch! Be sure to go to the north end and have a cannoli!

    The leaves are getting quite lovely here in Maine...

    Salem, Massachusetts is another interesting visit. A lot of history, notably with Nathaniel Hawthorne (The Scarlet Letter, House of the Seven Gables) and of course the Witch Trials. You might also enjoy the USS Constitution ("Old Ironsides") and the New England Aquarium. Their 24 ft deep Giant Ocean Tank is quite impressive.

    Thanks to everyone's advice. We had a great time and fall foliage (though a bit past peak) was beautiful. Being from South Florida, this is not something that we get to experience very often.

    Key sites that we enjoyed, just in case anyone is going to Boston:

    * The North End
    * Salem & Marblehead
    * Boston Common & Boston Gardens
    * Lexington & Concord out Route 2
    * Duck Tour
    * Plymouth, MA

    Glad that your stay in our area was good. I'm not sure that the color was as much past peak as it was just not good this year. I usually fill my media card full as I photograph the colors, but this year I only got 8 worth keeping. Like the Red Sox- I have to say "Wait 'till next year!"
