Have you ever been to Alaska?

My wife and I went there about 2 years ago. We spent most of our time near Fairbanks.

Don't miss Denali National Park.
If you go fairbanks, take time to go down the Richardson Hwy, past Eielson Air Force Base, to the Knotty Shop.

If we ever get to go back I hope to take the Alaska Railroad.

 

I have an oportunity to move there. Where would the best place to live be?

I've never been to Alaska, but I've visited the gravesite of Douglas Fairbanks. Does that count?

 

I live in Alaska. I highly recommend a visit. But, you need to spend enough time to see Denail (take the full trip out), go to Seward, get some halibut fishing in, salmon fishing, and anything else is subjective to what you're interested in. As far as moving here, that also is subjective.

Last year, there was a couple from Arizona that moved here. They bought a house sight unseen. Apparently, to them, "rustic" meant "more than 4 miles from Wal-Mart". They paid a moving company to bring everything here (the truck could not get to the house), they didn't know that many houses don't have indoor plumbing (I live in a town, and 4% of the houses still don't have running water), and electricity is an option in many places.

I have seen cars get stuck in the mud during breakup, here in town.

Anchorage, on the other hand, is just like any other big city, only further north.

What are your likes and dislikes? Why do you want to move here?

I am an Alaskan - born there in July 1955.

Have not been there since October 1955 .

 

Lived there around '65. Daddy had orders for Ft Wainwright and we left Mississippi, 8 of us (6 children, 2 adults) by car (Pontiac Bonneville) - took 6 days; I don't think the Al-Can Highway was paved.

I worked in the Foodland Shopping Center for awhile, but the thing I disliked was the long periods of light and then the long periods of dark. I also missed the South, lol.

I've also given some thought to moving to Alaska, probably not permanently but for a year or two. (My job allows me flexibility, and I'm also single.) It would be quite an adventure.

 

Been cruising to Alaska twice and really liked it! Enjoyed your pictures, Paul. We were at some of the same places.

 

Went to North Pole and Fairbanks. I wanted to move up there. I loved it.

 

It's one of three states I have not been to. I'd love to go one day.
