I wonder how much the fact that last year the coaches were obligated to vote for LSU as the champion (even though 3 did buck that obligation) had to do with USC being voted #1 in this preseason poll. They are probably also counting on Mike Williams being declared eligible again.

Otherwise, there is no reason to think this perseason poll is any beter forecast than they usually are. The voters have to rely too much on how the teams finished last year, with a little consideration to how many returning starters; which is only a 'fair' gauge about the next year.

Bama should be highly rated, given all the cheating they've done [IMG]

Interesting that Fox Sports is really high on Missouri! Perhaps I should look deeper. They pick Texas-Missouri game as possible game of the year.

Look for the Hurricanes to be in the hunt at the end of the season if FSU still hasn't hired a placekicker and the Canes are able to get by them for the 3rd time in 12 months.

USC has a padded out of conference schedule plus a weak PAC 10 to wade through. By the end of the season, I predict that many will be lamenting the elimination of "strength of schedule" in the BCS calculation.

BTW, Mizzou has had some good recruiting classes. They almost have a Div IAA O'line now. They'll be solid on defense and may surprise several teams.... then lose to Kansas again.

Clemson is the sleeper. They have the best QB in the ACC and possibly the country in an apples to apples comparison. Their receivers are finally on par with what a Bowden needs to be successful. And, they always play good, physical defense.

I would not be surprised to see them bushwhack Miami in the Orange Bowl.

The AP poll is now out, and interestingly it has the same 25 teams (as the ESPN/Coaches poll) as its top 25. The only change very significant at all is the AP has Iowa at #19, while the coaches have them at #12.

This is further verficiation (if any was needed) that the basis of pre-season polls is more standard-- last year's record and the returning starters-- than the criteria as the season begins to progress. But the season will again show that some teams will be overrated (as Auburn last year) and some will be underrated (as LSU last year).

Polls before anyone even takes a snap are worse then gambling in Vegas, there you at least know the odds. BTW, the Bama comment was funny stuff!

Why do we even need preseason polls? I think it "Puts the kiss of death" on many teams. Unrealistic expectations. Sports rags need something to sell until the real season gets rolling, I guess. :(

Just wait. After the first week of play they will be talking about Heisman candidates (if they aren't already). Another stupid thing is preseason awards like preseason all-America teams. (Example: OU's true freshman running back Adrian Peterson was named the conference's preseason newcomer of the year before he ever plays a game.)

That is why you should root for an underdog like I do in UTEP, with all the losing you can rest assured that there isn't any cheating going on. And if by some strange case there is cheating going on I guess you can rest in the fact that they aren't very good at it!

I expect it to take Alabama quite a while to dig out of the hole its infractions have placed it in.

I see LSU winning the national championship outright this year, leaving no doubt that last year was not a fluke. USC and LSU should have played the in the championship game.

You're right about last year... but not this year.

This year belongs to the Dawgs. Although as a Vols fan it breaks my heart, I expect UGA to slobber all over the USC Trojans for the National Title this year.

That would be HUGE! LSU vs. USC in the title game, to bad it won't be in N.O. this year. I think the home field advantage in last years BCS is a factor in the pre-season underating of LSU.

P.S. NEWSFLASH!! Southern Miss cracks the BCS this year! [IMG]

Here is a columnist for Fox Sports who picks Clemson to win it all!

    http://msn.foxsports.com/id/2796460

If they can beat Miami, Florida St, Texas A&M, and Virginia all on the road, they will deserve a shot at the title. That's a big if, though.

    Go Tigers!
