Looks like Sammy is gone. How will the trade of Sosa to the O's affect the Cubbies' chances of winning the pennant in '05?

As a Cub fan since 1952, here is my 2 cents worth:
Sosa's going is a very good thing. It is a very long season and the clubhouse atmosphere is important. If Garciapara stays healthy all year the Cubs can easily make up Sosa's numbers. Dubois in right will be just fine. Hairston at 2b and lf spot duty could be interesting. The Cubs will be slightly less right handed with Hollandsworth(former Rookie Of The Year) and Walker playing often with Patterson. The Cubs could have 5 guys hit 30+ homeruns.

The Cub's problem will be pitching again and one can only hope that Prior, Wood and Farnsworth can stay healthy. Farnsworth has "closer" stuff but a 10 cent head. He could dominate if he just knew where the ball was going. Just being a thrower is not enough. This is Kerry Wood's problem as well. The day that he can put it within 5 inches of Barrett's mitt consistently I will smell 20 game winner and Cy Young Award. With Zambrano, Prior, and or Wood the Cubs could have 2 or 3 twenty game winners. Not since the Orioles of the 70's has anything like that happened, and they had 4 twenty game winners. Unbelievable. Last year no one would have said Zambrano and Maddux would lead the team in wins.

The Cubs will have offense and improved speed and defense, and they just got younger. Even with all their injuries the Cubs stayed in the race unitl the last two weeks. The Astros will not live a charmed life this year. Little offense and no Kent and no Berkman until May or June. Pettit and Clemens would have to win 25 to 30 apiece.

Think positive like Red Sox fans do and did. Hey, it could happen. Cubs play in October and Santo gets into the Hall of Fame.

As Ernie Banks would say, "Let's play three".

Let me get this out in the open right now.

    GO CARDINALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really liked Sammy back when he and Big Mac were going head to head. He was a fan favorite where ever he went.

Then there was the corked bat incident. I believe that he only had the one corked bat. I do not believe it was an accident that he was using it. That bat should have been no where near the field durring a game.

Then there was last season. Enough said on that subject.

I hope Sammy can go to Baltimore and become the nice guy he used to be. It may just be time for a change.

Wallygator and BB Bill, my Jim failed to include that he was born in Aurora, Il. in 1947. He lived there until he was drafted into the Army but we moved back there after he got out of the service for a few years. Our daughter was born there.

I'm a Cubs fan too. I also like the Red Sox. We lived in Conn. for about 13 years. I cannot tolerate the Yankees!

I agree with Jim. Sammy's attitude seemed to change and some of his interviews this past year left me uncomfortable with his feelings toward the team.

As a lifelong Cubs fan, I am happy to see Sammy leave town. You just do not walk out on your teammates like he did. I mean come on, how much money is the guy making and he cannot sit on the bench for 3 hours and root for his teammates? I wish him well in Baltimore, but glad he is out of a Cubs uniform!

    Go Cubs!!!!!!

I think it improves the atttitude of the clubhouse, whic hshould help. Their talent level is high enough IF the pitchers can stay healthy.

Do you actually believe that the Cubs hitting and run production will improve with not only the loss of Sosa, but Alou too? I believe the attitude of the Cub's clubhouse has been greatly over-stated. Yes, the big "if", can the pitchers stay healthy; their past record in that area isn't too promising.

Yes, I do. They should have Garciappara for the whole year, Todd Hollandsworth is healthy now in left field, Burnitz will help with power numbers. With Alou and Sosa, it was home run or nothing. Anytime Alou got on base it was an automatic out because he would either get picked off or thrown out at home. I think they'll be a better TEAM instead of just sitting back and waiting for someone to hit a 3 run homer.
