I recently was presented this idea and wondered about its validity.
It was stated that "with the sin of Adam, he gave over the rule of the earth to Satan. I really don't know what to think about this. Any Thoughts?

I would be very careful about where this line of thought could lead.

    — Gen. 1:28, ESV

Adam and Eve did not lose the authority that was given by God; we still have it. Is there any Scripture that would indicate that Adam forfeited his authority to Satan?

It sounds as if someone is conflating several passages to create the original statement.

  3. Well according to the New Testament Satan did have rule over the EARTH.

    LUKE 4:5-7

And Satan led Jesus up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the World in a moment of time.
And the Devil said to Him " I will give You all this DOMAIN and it's glory; for it has been HANDED over to me , and I will give it to whom ever I wish
Therefore if You worship me, it shall be ALL yours"

That verse isn't saying that Satan had the RIGHT to give all that to Jesus.

It already belonged to Him (Jesus) anyway, yet Satan was claiming he could give it to Jesus. I think that was actually an example of the "height of hutzpah" on the Devil's part.

Adam never had a throne, nor did he ever rule the Earth. He was only made a steward of it by the true Owner over the lesser beings on the planet.

It is nonsense to state that Satan has or ever had rule of the earth. In fact Adam never had rule over the earth. As far as Satan's attempt to tempt Jesus Christ recall that Our Savior also told us that Satan was the father of liars.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

God made Adam from "DUST" (Earth), then told Satan he would "EAT DUST".

Ge 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground,

Ge 3:14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

God gave Satan "FLESH" for his "Bread of life" in the same sense Jesus's body is our "BREAD OF LIFE".

We're "born in sin", that is a "body of flesh" which is at "emnity" with God, because it's is given to Satan.

Crucifying the old man, we "Starve" Satan of his Food.

Ro 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed,

1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may "DEVOUR":

God's "Curse" on the "Earth" (dust) was a curse on "Flesh".

1Co 1:29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.

In a manner of speaking, Satan does control "Earth (ly) flesh", that is until we "Crucify the old man".

Adam is described as a steward of creation in Genesis 2 and appointed ruler of creation in Genesis 1:26-28. The roles are complimentary and both were given to humans by God.

I think humanity is still described as having dominion over creation long after the Fall:

"When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
    You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,

    all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas."
    (Psalm 8:3-8, ESV)

While Hebrews 2 and 1 Corinthians 15 apply these verses specifically to Jesus, I don't think that negates their original application to humans in general.

  9. Your right Bapmom Gods word is a lie it doesn't mean what it says ! That was just one Bible verse there are more. Where is Joseph to defend Gods word ?

  10. Satan is the current god of this world. Satan is a spirit conspirator manipulating the world by deception and by fostering the spirit of disobedience. While on this Earth, Christ admitted that someone other than himself was the current ruler of the world.
John 18:36 Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place."

Paul identified who was the god of this world and warned his followers that it was Satan who blinded the world to the glorious gospel of Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. KJV

Satan is deceiving the entire world and is fooling the world to worship a false Christ. The book of Revelation identifies Satan as the great deceiver of the entire world.

Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the Earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Paul preached to the Ephesians that mankind's true battle is against Satan and his demons.

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Peter stated that a Christian's enemy is the devil.

1 Peter 5:8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings

Satan is the god of this world until Christ returns. The reason Satan is the current ruler of this world goes back to the Garden of Eden. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate of the Tree of Good and Evil, they allowed Satan to rule them instead of God. If Adam and Eve had resisted Satan and obeyed God, then Adam and Eve would have been under the Government of God. By yielding to the lies of the serpent, they started the process of the whole world being under Satan's sway.

1 John 5:19 … the whole world is under the control of the evil one.

Christ had to come to the Earth and live out his life as a flesh and blood human being so mankind can someday be free from the control of the evil one. Christ is called the second Adam. The first Adam failed in resisting Satan. One of Christ's objectives while on this Earth was to successfully resist the temptation of Satan. By successfully resisting Satan and obeying God, Christ qualified to become the ruler of the world at his Second Coming.

Matthew 4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." 4 But He answered and said, "It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God."' 5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: "He shall give His angels charge over you,' and, "In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone."' 7 Jesus said to him, "It is written again, "You shall not tempt the LORD your God."' 8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me." 10 Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, "You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve."' 11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

Christ did not disagree with Satan concerning his ability to give Christ all of the Kingdoms of the World. He knew Satan was the ruler of this world and could turn them over to him if he so wished. Christ also knew that by obeying God instead of Satan, he would qualify to dethrone Satan at his return in power and glory. Overcoming Satan's temptations were necessary so mankind could achieve its true destiny.

Don't forget that Satan is a liar. Do you really think He could have given all that to Jesus? Satan is the god of this world as Baal was the god of Moab. Worshipped as God, but not really God.

Don't forget that God is called the Most High God, by the gentiles of the Old Testament. Though Nebuchadnezzar worshipped idols, he saw that there was a Most High God, who was really the God and true Ruler of the world.

    Who set up Pharoah? Satan?

Though Satan is worshipped as God, he is not the God of this world, and is not in any real control.

  12. Aaron where do you get your theology from ? Everything that you say is of your own interpetation. You deny Gods word at ever turn or do you just deny anything I post ? get real and give it up.

How many scripture verses do you need to accept Gods word ? You want to only keep that which YOU agree with and throw out the rest. THAT IS CALLED HERASY !

Like I said people are not stupid I am getting alot of POSITIVE responses ;)

That's why these verses are so special:

    RFW,

I thought you weren't reading anything I posted?

After all, Im an IFB, and we are all people-hating, lie-spewing, idol worshippers.....right?

Seriously, to the point, Satan being the god of this world is not the same thing as Satan OWNING this actual earth. Jesus saying that His kingdom is not of this world is NOT saying that Satan OWNS the earth, and YES, the Bible recorded a lie of Satan. It did it in several other places as well.

You have a nice day now, RFW.

I appreciate all of the responses. It was not my intention to trigger anger, please discuss the issue in a manner consistent with Christian Love. This is not an issue that bears on heresy.
Does the scripture actually say that Satan's position was given to him because of the sin of Adam? Or is this just inference?

Satan lies--by nature. One cannot believe anything he says. Do not even listen. That is what got Eve in trouble--she got beguiled.

Satan is the "prince of the power of the air", "the god of this world." He has legions of demonic spirits which take up their abode in various beings including man.

Only Jesus can deal with satan.

    Selah,

    Brother James

P.S. The kingdom still belongs to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords--always has, always will.

    LorenB,

I can't think of any place where the Bible actually spells out anything about Adam having control taken away and it being given to Satan. I think each retained his "own role", but Adam's job became harder because of the curse.

My belief is that Satan was thrown out of heaven before God created earth, or during that span of creation. So then when Adam sinned, he fell prey to the wiles of the devil, but I don't think that caused Satan to become a "ruler" over anything in a new way.

Is God Sovereign over His Creation or is He not? That is the question and some of you are denying that He is.

God clearly is God of gods, and has sovereignty. But He gave dominion of the earth to man, and we have not done very well with it!

We may not have handed over dominion to Satan per se, but we sure have followed his lead in the exercise of our dominion!
