It appears America's teenagers do not know much about U.S. history -- or its independence. A recent poll shows that almost a quarter of America's teens have trouble passing a 4th-grade-level U.S. history test. CNSNews reports the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation commissioned the study, which surveyed 1,000 teenagers across the country. Twenty-two percent of the teens surveyed could not name the country from which the U.S. declared its independence; 14% thought "France" was the correct answer. The survey also found that 17% did not know the number of original colonies; 24% thought the U.S. and Great Britain fought in the Civil War; 19% could not identify the three branches of government; 31% did not know who wrote "The Star Spangled Banner"; and 15% were unaware that the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

You hit it right on nail when you said it appears, and as we all know, apearenses can be decieving.
You said the study was on 1,000 teens. This is hardly a good test sampling of the millions of teens in America. Another thing that you must remember is what were the exact questions these teens were asked. It's not unheard of for the people that write the questions to write them in such a way as to be sure to get the answer that they are looking for. I never put much stock in polls for this reason and many more.
