"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." ---- John 3:16

"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him." ---- I John 2:15

    Okay.....

I would love to read your understanding(s) of the why the very same John seems to be contradicting not only himself, but also the very Word of God when it comes to the definite article and the noun to which that particular definite article is attached, were we diagramming the above verses. [RABBIT: Is the fine art and science of sentence diagramming even in the goals and/or objectives of contemporary Language Arts studies in our {the US's} government controlled and operated "public" schools?]

I have my own idea(s) of the above-mentioned request.

OTOH, I'd love to read what my fellow BB posters have to tell BB's ever-expanding audience(s) about these two passages that the Holy Spirit moved the very same John to put into writing in the first century Anno Domini.

Your answers will be most helpful if they include Scripture(s) to graphically aid and abet the point(s) Thou art trying to put into English (cf. Koine Greek).

In fact, said Scriptures would do, shall we say, "A WORLD of good!!":rolleyes:Laugh

Once you've ceased and desisted from those gnawing groans, pull yourselves together and proceed with vigor and enthusiasm to Thine board wherein are found the keys [Not to the Kingdom!] to that there computer gizmo in front of Thou.

    Okay .............?!!?

The "whosoever" tell you what the world is in this verse.

Read the very next verse, verse 16 and it will tell you what "the world" is that we are not to love.

Sentence diagramming was never a goal. Becoming competent writers is the goal. Sentence diagramming is merely a tool to get there. Oftentimes it doesn't work. Some teachers use it, some don't.

There you go, Scar, your pedantic feathers are ruffled again!! :p

Having taught English many years ago, I've been there and, consequently, done that myself.

A REAL challenge is to assign your students to diagram Esther 8:9 right after they struggled through the complexities of John 10:35!

Back in 1976 my fifth graders diagrammed Genesis 1:1 just to learn how to diagram a relatively simple sentence.

Yes, I'm quite familiar with the goals of grammar. It's somewhat comparable to training, e.g., an automobile mechanic who one day wants to be a member of a NASCAR pit crew.

IOW, he needs to know the proper working inter-relationship(s) of the various parts the motor vehicle in which said motor vehicle's driver is strapped down for the duration of the race. If he/she doesn't know the difference in the functions of (We're getting old here.) a carb's rotor arm and the roll bar located in close proximity to the aforementioned driver's body, well .....

When I was in Grad School, a fellow classmate of mine could opine for hours on the complexities of Civil War weaponry, but when our professor (Who survived the Bataan Death March and subsequent years of imprisonment by the military of the Empire of Japan!) read my classmate's term paper, he realized that my classmate apparently was not one who got straight A's in English grammar OR composition.

When I took Biblical "Herman J. You Ticks," a requirement was to diagram correctly [Note the absence of a split infinitive!] the entire Bible passage you assigned yourself to examine. (Replete with correctly formatted footnotes and bibliography of course.)

Well, 'nuff of that thar grammer 'n' rite-ing stuff eye ain't 'bout two larn, y'all!!!

One day I'll tell you of my favorite General Math teacher I had in 1960.

    PS-- Don't let this out, but I sort-a, kind-a 'gree w/ yaw's an-sir two my quest-ton(s) ree Whirl.

John uses the word translated "world" in two ways, to refer to fallen mankind, and (2) to refer to the corrupt value system of fallen mankind. So God loved fallen mankind in this way... and do not love the corrupt value system of fallen mankind, do not conflict.

    Calling me a her-eye-tick are ye???Devilish

Well, unless the BB higher-ups get too many nega-tory reports of my OP, I believe the remote possibility exists that you will actually si some answers.

I've got this, shall we say, "acquaintance" whose principal pastime is to find any minor jot and/or tittle from Genesis 1:1a to Revelation 22:21z [Not to mention the Book of Con-Cordance!] wherein a supposed contra [Remember them from during the Reagan Adm.? ---- Their band was well known in that era!] diction can be unearthed.

Having theologians of the more robust sort---the obvious antithesis of those gentlemen mentioned in Acts 17:5---might be of some value to fend off my "acquaintance," at least for this one anyway.

It's simple. Jesus loved the people of the world. John is saying don't love the things the unsaved world loves. Be not conformed. You can easily tell what he means by reading the rest of the scripture. (For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.)
