Teacher Troubles

    This year at school I chose to take an independent study with a teacher that I respected very much and learned a lot from. Well to say the least it hasn’t turned out the way I wanted it t. I turn to you in advice. He is having me preview movies for him and write worksheets for the students in his class. The problem is that the movies he is having me preview are movies that I do not agree with. There are immoral things that I do not want to subject myself to. How do I tell him in a nice way that the movies he is having me preview go against my beliefs? The catch is I have to do it in a nice way because he is going to give me a grade. Thank You

    Oh, boy, that's a biggie. I'm a teacher, myself, and you are in a somewhat delicate situation. I have a few questions first:

    1. How did you get this independent study? Did you sign up to review movies?

    2. What were you expecting to do when you got this subject?

    If this isn't what you expected, you're well within your rights to change your schedule.

    Granted, you like this teacher, but carefully consider WHY you like this teacher.

    Of course, perhaps you are hoping to influence him to examine his own morality...but since he is giving you the grade (as you've said), you may have to defer THIS goal.

    There are plenty of other ways to spend your time and education rather than continue to compromise your standards for a person that you don't want to upset.

    I'm hoping that you'll reply soon, and I'll check in to see how it's going.

    if you're in a film critque class and you're in high school(?) then I seriously think that you won't have a leg to stand on... anymore it's the norm to see a movie like "Chicago" in the curriculum of an "art" class...

    Though if the teacher is one that is well respected 9 times out of 10 they will understand.


    but what he's having you do sounds more like a "teacher's aid" in which case you should be able to get out of the movie viewing.

    1. How did you get this independent study? Did you sign up to review movies?
    The way I got this independent study was in the beginning of the summer I didn’t really have anymore classes to take (our school is small and when your a senior the pickings get slim) to fill my schedule. So the counselor suggested that I take an independent study, with a teacher. So I agreed. The first week the teacher and I sat down and he told me that he was going to have me help him critique projects, do some advanced research, and write him a few papers. When I signed up I never thought that viewing movies was going to be part of the description


    2. What were you expecting to do when you got this subject?
    Well, since my independent study is for a global studies class, I expected to advance my knowledge about different cultures around the world. I wanted to learn about different political systems, customs, and people.


    Granted, you like this teacher, but carefully consider WHY you like this teacher.

    I guess the reason I chose this teacher is because when I had him for class sophomore year, he was very knowledgeable. He knew what he was talking about and I respected his knowledge base. I was expecting to get a lot out if this independent study.

    I hope this helps. I am praying about this. I trust God to help me and lead me in the right direction.
