I'm gonna go with Joshua(his name is Joshua, not Josh) and Abby, There is no such thing as Christian Rock, it is just worshiping Satan/Luthsfer. I personally like Southern Gospel, I can accually understand what they are saying. ~Kayla

Nu thang, yeah, I think that's the meaning. I was hoping that LivingSacrifice would be able to see that, but I'm not sure she did.

Kayla, so every time I listen to rock I'm worshipping Satan? Every time a drum player plays he's worshipping Satan? Wow, that's good to know. Out of curiosity, how do you know that? Who told you? What verse did you read? I'm just wondering what evidence you're using to back up such a strong claim, that every time my friends play in their rock band they're worshipping Satan.

Butterflies, I'm still curious how you know Satan was the chief musician in heaven?

I'm just trying to get a point across. Some of these artist I have heard(I go to public school). Some them the lyrics are covered by the loud music, and you don't know what they are saying or anything is just dancing to the beat. That is another thing School Dances they are very bad. Anyways, all I am saying is review your music carefully. If you don't even know the lyrics or it seems like something that you wouldn't hear in church. Something that you think isn't glorifing God then don't listen it. I mean if you wouldn't want Jesus in the room when you are listening to it then don't listen to it.

I know perfectly well what the lyrics say, do you? I don't hear classical or southern Gospel in church, but that doesn't mean I can't listen to it, does it? I think it IS glorifying God! And yes, I would be perfectly comfortable sitting down with Jesus and going through my song collection, I'd love to be able to ask him what he thought of these lyrics, or this tune, or that rift. How sweet would that be?

GREAT discussion. Thank you for keeping your passions in check and not getting personal. I know that not everyone will agree on this subject, but I really value a graceful discussion.

I think valid questions have been asked. Is there anything wrong with lyrics that just talk about ordinary, inocuous subjects (other than Christ)? And just exactly what constitutes "worldliness" in the way a music SOUNDS?

It may be of interest to study the origins of some of the traditional hymns we sing in church today. It has been said that "popular" music of centuries ago was used as a basis for church hymns that feature more spiritual lyrics than those of the street...the rhythyms and patterns were identical.

I don't want to hear P O D in church, but I sure don't mind them on my daughter's radio. I'm thrilled that she chooses to listen to words that promote a spiritual life.

    Hey all,
I'm new here and I have to say that it is nice to actually see that I am not the most conservative person out there. I am an eighteen year old student at Clemson University studying engineering while trying to find God's will for my life. I must say that I will listen to many types of music. I find that I can actually thank God for making even secular songs sound so good. I praise God by listening to the chords made in any type of music (excluding rap). I find it absolutely amazing, the amount of sounds one can make with any instrument. As for contemporary christian bands, I respect their efforts but I only see them as copying secular bands and I am a sucker for originals. Praise and worship songs bug the snot out of me because they are repetitive and mostly sound the same. I enjoy older hymns myself, done in a bluegrass gospel style, with banjos, guitars, fiddles (violins), etc. It's all just personal preference I guess. Anyway, I just thought I would check out a baptist forum, so here I am.

Hey Jonathan, I don't understand this you said," Have you ever heard the band Living Sacrifice? They just broke up, but they were a really good hardcore metal rock band. Not my style of music, but they were pulled it off better than any other Chirstian band I;ve heard." Well in that statement you kinda made them not look so Christian b/c what kinda CHRISTian band breaks up?? It seems as if we are throwing the word CHRISTian around to easily! I'm sorry if I sound rude but I agree with Alivingsacrifice. (I like Rom. 12 too!)
Also to anyone out there who is in with the whole CCM movement. YM mom has told me that when we take God down adn put a pair of Levi's on him and call him 'Homeboy' we are sinning. Really it is taking His anem is vain. Well when we take the world's music it is jsut like mixing poisen w/ water. I am getting ready to read this book "Why I Left the Contemporary Christian Music Movement." If any of yall wana read it with me I'd be glad to! I'll double check on the title and get back w/ you on Thursday!

Being new to the forum, i can't believe what i'm reading. People advocating "christian" rock? How can rock musick (a little KJB lingo there), a tool and invention of the devil be turned into good. It reminds me of an analogy, "Christian" beer. What is that supposed to mean?

This is a great tract on the subject, it's worth the time. The author is a former rock guitarist and he systematically shows CCM for what it is.

    http://www.av1611.org/crock.html

It is also said that traditional hyms came from popular music of the time but that is just not true. Hymn writers were the most dedicated of christians and always made sure their music was of a godly sort.

hey all, i'm back, havn't been on a long time.

anyways. lindz, you said, "how can a CHRISTian band break up?" well, really, it's quite simple. people in this world have things that are called GOALS in life, and for the christian, they're hopefully from God, not themselves or others. when a band breaks up, most of the time it don't mean that they're breaking up b/c of bad relationships with eachother or with God, the reason for a band breaking up or splitting is because the members of the band(s) have other GOALS or MISSIONS that God has put on their heart. for example, i know a band called "Bailey's Car" (and don't get all worked up about the name not glorifying God, the names describe the band and its members) they broke up, and i know them all personally, because of the different GOALS and MISSIONS that they each had, one went to work at a camp. Another band is WHITEHEART, which is one of my favorite bands, broke up because they each had personal GOALS and MISSIONS to pursue, for example, Billy Smiley went on to make other music, his CD is called "Neverlost" i love it. anyways, my point was, just b/c a band is breaking up don't mean they're not christian.

thanks all and have a great day.

This topic seems to be getting more heated. This shows that we believe strongly what we believe. I have a few things to say. beat is not necassarily a bad thing. I am an IFB'er too and I think that a beat is going to be in every song. But when it starts sounding like the devil's(world's) music we tend to(even if we don't notice it,) sng to have fun more than praise and sing to Jesus. Now I know some might say that music is to have fun. I am not saying you cannot have fun while singing to GOd, I am jsut saying that we need to please him first. God HATES the music when our HEART (CAPS added) is not in it. In the Bible yall have probably heard, "Do HEARTILY as unto the Lord." But we should love and have a great time praising GOd otherwise we really aren't praising Him. Alo

Also some people say that it makes it so ppl who aren't Christians can hear it and get saved, a way of evangelism. I'm sorry but music is not for that purpose. Our pastor, Dr. David Peninngton, during the summer talked about the Believer and Music. There is a qoute that says, "Our responsibilty is not to contaminate this message with wroldly idioms, like rock music. There is no need for manipulations adn stimulation of rock music to get people saved. Evangelism has been and is greatly aided by Christlike music presented by Christlike performers, but ultimately it is the proclaimationof the Wrod of God, accomanied by the convicting power of the Holy Spirit, that brings people into a saving relationship wtih Jesus Christ." (The Chistian and Rock Music: A study of Biblical Principles of Music, p 317. By Guenter Preuss.)

Think that Mr. Preuss is referring to Heb. 4:12, "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder the soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of thoughts and the intents of the heart."
We don't need to have worldly sounding music to win souls! If we try our heardest God will take care of the rest and reward us in the end- whether the soul got saved or not. I am NOT saying that the saving of souls is not as important as rewards. After all, I would rather go giftless than to see people go to hell!

All I am saying is that CCM is nto needed to win souls.

Another good point is: what do you think of when you hear the words- rock music? Do you think of peaceful, Christ-loving people? DO you think of LADIES DRESSED COMPLETELY?? I highly doubt that most of us do. Do you think of people coming together to sing praise to their Maker? Do you think of people full of sin needing a Saviour? The point I am tryingto get accross now is that people would are into the CCM and P/W music are using the music that people gyrate thier bodies sinfully to! What would you think if we took the lyrics of the song, "As the Deer" or "Victory in Jesus" to the tune of "Oops... I did it again." or "Uh-Oh!!"? Can you think of singing "Blessed Assurance" to a many other tunes of sensual, sexual, immoral songs? I tried to think of songs that would be horrible to put with God's music and just couldn't write it down!

Think on these things and get back to me!

Nu Thang already addressed this, so I'll leave it alone. And I agree, Romans 12 is great! I think the band Living Sacrifice would agree too.
Are you saying Jesus wouldn't wear Levi's? I don't know, I think if he were born today instead of 2000 years ago there's a pretty good chance he'd be wearing Levi's or Wranglers or something along those veins. But I digress...

How are we taking his name in vain? And didn't most music originate in the world? Where do you think Classical music came from? So what do you think about traditional Hebrew music? Did you know that it was very rhythmic? Jesus would have danced to a beat much harder than the one you hear in the Hymns.

And then when you're done that why don't you read a book defending CCM so that you get the view from the opposite spectrum? If you only learn positions that you already agree with, you really learn nothing but how to close your mind.

    Who said it was?

    Yes.

Nicolas, that site you posted is probably one of the worst "Christian" sites on the internet. Half-truths, sensationalism, and outright lies. It would be smart to find another source.

Yes, and the article is ridiculous.

Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll. So what? Where's that from, the 70's? I realize that some people can't move on from such terribly immoral times, but come on, lets get over it. No longer is rock music automatically associated with sex and drugs. Only in the fundamentalist Christian world are they still hanging on to those images.

If anything Rock music has become even more immoral since it's not-so-humble beginnings. Rock & roll is, and always will be the music of rebellion.
