Secular Entertainment

The bible says Col 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, [do] all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

That means that we are to limit ourselves in areas that might dishonor Him or ourselves. Also we are to flee from the apearance of sin;

1Th 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

This means to stay away from anything that even looks like it is sin or could turn into sin. Most movies and music that are secular have a great deal of sin involved in them that we need not be looking or listening to.

 

I had to vote "other" on movies because I don't care what the rating is but I think we should be careful about the content, which wasn't an option.

 

As a more mature Christian adult, I can and will do things that I do not recommend that you as a yout to do.

The most important thing is to flee sin, as freeatlast said.

Other than that, the matter is between you and God. I will take music for example (since I am a musician and have been involved with it my whole life). There is a lot of great music out there that is not Christian. Just last week I saw a tremendous big band orchestra perform at the performing arts center. I also listen to various styles and groups in order to gain further appreciation for the music.

However, I try not to compromise my beliefs and listen to stuff that encourages me to sin. In other words, there actually is a great deal of "non-Christian" media that is not bad. This does not give us the excuse to listen to blatantly anti-God, anti-Christian stuff.

 

I generally think that if the music or movie has a bad theme, skip it. Just don't get involved- it's not worth gettin' hurt, is it? John 8:44 says, "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." The devil will try to make us beleive that we are okay being in sin. Even if it is little. In Genesis 3, God shows us about how the devil lies and tricks. Eve said in Genesis 3:13, "..., The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.".

 

I may not totally understand the difference and I do invite a more clear explaination of this, but I do not see one set of standards for the young and another for the old. We all are to abstain from even the apearance of evil. I do not equate maturity with wisdom since wisdom can be held at any age and maturity is subjective to age in most cases. Do you agree?

 

Personally, I do not watch movies, read books or listen to music that I encourage my youth group at church to refrain from. Now that does not mean that I think secular movies, books, music are bad. A good clean novel? Go for it? Stetamy sexy movie? nope.
I wont ask them to do something I am not willing to do. What kind of discipler would I be?

I do not go to movies for "entertainment." I am a busy woman. Sitting two to 4 hours at a movie theartre can be punishment for this ADD adult. But I will go see movies. I will go see rated R movies. Not because they are rated R, but because of theme and content. Many I may or may not recommend to youth simply because of their ability or inability to deal with the content. Not becuse of the R rating.

I do not submit myself to "temptations" just because it is "entertainment." Therefore, I stand to repeat what I said earlier.
