Repentance : The action of repenting; sincere regret or remorse. Turning from self to God.

It seems to me that this is an action by the individual, a particular action, a "work" if you will - the initial step for the sinner as he turns to God. This idea is found in many places of the Scriptures, among them: Matt 4:17, Luke 24: 46-48, Matt 3:8, Luke 5: 31-32.

The Greek word meaning 'repent' is metanoieo. Its basic meaning is a change of mind.
True Biblical faith, the faith that saves, is someone realising that he is a poor lost sinner whom God would be perfectly just in sending to hell, seeing the Lord Jesus Christ as his only hope of salvation, turning away from his past, sinful life and laying hold of Christ as a drowning man might lay hold of a lifebelt. Saving faith incorporates repentance. The two words are found together in Mark 1:15, and throughout the Bible they tend to be used interchangeably (eg. compare Acts 2:38 with verse 44).

Ultimately, both repentance and faith are gifts of God (Acts 11:18; Ephesians 2:8).

True - But it is never a "work" mentioned in the Bible as constituting "salvation by works".

Rather - God is the "first cause" who 'draws all mankind' even before repentance John 12:32.
God who "Convicts the world of sin and righteousness and judgment" even before repentance. John 16.
God who "so loved the World that He gave His only Son" John 3:16.. who gave His Son "to be the atoning sacrifice for OUR sins and not for our sins only but for the sins of the whole WORLD" 1 John 2:2
