312 Days

Today was the first time I have used a phone in 312 days. I wanted to last for one year without one, however, I had to reduce it to roughly 10.25 months.

I didn't even use a land line. I just wanted to prove it to myself that it could be done. Yes, cell phones are very convenient. But they can be incredibly intrusive too. People are so dependent on them -- as if these mobile devices supply oxygen.

People can't seem to navigate the process of walking because they are glued to a device. Folks can't enjoy a meal without texting (which I have never done),playing games or speaking in loud voices.

I'm old enough to remember living for years without the use of a cell phone. I didn't feel deprived during my 312 days. I admit it was challenging at times though, but it was worth the experiment.

So now I have joined the rest of you to a limited extent with a basic model.

Have you ever tried to become unwired for a time? Try to connect with folks face-to-face instead of virtually. I prefer the truly one-to-one method.

 

I like that term "electronic leash." People are leading unbalanced lives with their addiction to their gadgets.

If I was considered extreme for not using a cell phone for 10 plus months -- everyone else who is wedded to their mobile units in their daily lives is indeed extreme.

From 1996 to 2006 I had only a landline. For nine years I had a cell phone which I used moderately.

I would like folks to take a break from their cell phones for a week or so and detox. They may find it a relief. They should also wean themselves from Facebook,Twitter, Myspace and other forms of popular social media for a time. (I don't use any of them.)
