I have a Bible Study book on "John", so I am on the first lesson.....anyway, in John 2:1-11, it stated that Jesus turned the water into wine, and He made the wine even better than before. Well, my study book asked me "what is the spiritual significance in this?"
I checked my Life Application Bible notes, it stated that since the wine Jesus made was the best, so life in HIM is better than life on our own.
Never thought of that story in THAT perspective before!! [IMG] Just thought I like to share with you this so you can enjoy it too. [IMG]

The spiritual significance is given in JOhn 20:31 -- that we might believe that Jesus is hte Son of God. It had nothing to do withe "life in Him." This is a case of a study Bible trying to create something where there isn't. 2:11 plainly calls this hte "first sign" and John tells us the spiritual signifiance of hte signs.

Craig maybe you would care to elaborate.I know you have made an in depth study of the book of John. Why would'nt that be a valid comment?

I checked out my Life Application Bible and in the "notes" area under the Scriptures for 2:10, here it is what it says (I am copying it for you here):

"John 2:10 - People look everywhere but to God for excitement and meaning. For some reason, they expect God to be dull and lifeless. Just as the wine Jesus made was the best, so life in him is better than life on our own. Why wait until everything else runs out before trying God? Why save the best until last?"

I hope this explains more what I meant by the answer to that question -- this is the valid answer that I got here to answer in the study book on John about Jesus turning water into wine (I am doing an individual study at home). [IMG]
If this is the wrong answer, care to show me where and why? [IMG]

Nancy, I agree that life in Jesus is best but I don't think that is what the account in Jn. 2 is about. I think that saying that is spiritualizing the passage. The passage is very profound but it is about other things like:
    1. It's Jesus' first recorded miracle
    1. This miracle was done out of public view as only his disciples and the servants knew about it
    3. The disciples got evidence that Jesus was the Messiah from this miracle
    4. The bins of water were for the ritual washing of hands that the Pharisees practiced, and Jesus used this water to turn it into wine

Another example of spiritualizing is saying when Jesus calmed the storm, he can calm the storms of our life. It's true Jesus calms the storms of our life, but that is not what the passage is about or what it is saying. It is about Jesus' power over nature.

We shouldn't try to read things into a passage.
The Life Application Bible tends to do this a lot, which is one reason I stopped using mine.

If this spiritiualizing method is used, then all sorts of things can be read into a passage that aren't there, including invalid things. It's best to stick to what the passage is saying just from the text and in context.

Nancy it might help you to ad www.biblecentre.net to your list of favorites. There are many helps there for you both old classic material which is good as well as newer material. This will help flesh out your personal study and give it more depth than a study Bible is able to provide.

HOHNancy, I have no problem with the application that study Bible made to the text. I think it is quite consistent with what John is presenting in his gospel. Here are three reasons why I think it is plausible to say that John is presenting faith in Christ as a superior way of life in this story.

First, John's gospel is written later than the synoptics and his Christian readers were, no doubt, familiar with themes found in the earlier gospels. Jesus as the new wine is a theme presented in the synoptics and John's account subtly echos and expands a theme with which believers would have been familiar.

Second, John often quotes the mundane words of an unbeliever who misunderstands Jesus and uses them with an ironic twist and with a spiritualized meaning to state a deep theological truth. Nicodemus and Caiaphus are both used this way by John in the book.

Third, John uses physical water in many of the signs and miracles he presents to picture aspects of eternal life.

This is not a matter of allegorizing or spiritualing the text on our own. It is a matter of discovering and understanding the layers and shades of meaing that the AUTHOR intended and had in mind. Unfortunately, the "single-meaning only" theory of hernenuetics to which some of our posters seem to belong can be an obstacle to seeing what the author wanted to communicate.

Exactly what in this text communicates to you that this spirutalizing is what the AUTHOR intended? I think this is EXACTLY a matter of spiritualizing the text on our own.
