False Teaches and Heretics Purchased by Jesus Christ

"But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who shall secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction." - 2 Peter 2:1

A very clear passage from the New Testament, that shows that by His Death on the cross, Jesus Christ also "BOUGHT" those who are going to end up in hell.

Some have sought to weaken the words when they wrongly argue that Peter does not use "κύριος" (Lord), but instead, "δεσπότης" (Master). This is what I call "wishful theology"! From this they argue, that it does not refer to the Lord Jesus Christ, but God the Father! If they would only turn to the Book of Jude, which is very similar in content with 2 Peter, they will see that in verse 4, Jesus Christ is very clearly called "δεσπότης". This word denotes one who is "absolute ruler", also "master, lord, owner". All of which is very true for the Lord Jesus Christ.

Peter here says that these "false prophets, false teaches, heretics", who will be damned in eternal hell, reject the fact that the Lord Jesus Christ BOUGHT them by His death/blood. Not as some would have use believe, that Jesus simply in some way "died" for the entire human race. But actually BOUGHT these, as in PURCHASED them by His blood on the cross. The Greek is "ἀγοράζω", which is used for the "purchase" of anything from the market place. It is used in the New Testament also for the Redemption price paid for sinners, as in 1 Corinthians 6:20, "you are BOUGHT (ἀγοράζω) with a price"; and 7:23; Revelation 5:9, "thou wast slain, and hast REDEEMED (ἀγοράζω) us to God by thy blood"; Revelation 14:3-4, "who were REDEEMED (ἀγοράζω) from the earth...These were REDEEMED (ἀγοράζω) from among men". No doubt that the word is clearly used for the REDEMPTION PRICE paid for by Jesus Christ on the cross, by His death and shed blood.

"Denying - Him whom, above all they ought to confess. Lord , [despoteen] - 'Master and Owner' (cf. Jud_1:4). Whom the true doctrine teaches to be their OWNER by right of purchase. 'Denying Him who bought them, that He should be thereby their Master. Even the ungodly were "bought" by His "precious blood." It shall be their bitterest self-reproach in hell, that, as far as Christ's redemption was concerned, they might have been saved. The denial of His propitiatory sacrifice is included (cf. 1Jn_4:3)." (Jamieson, Fausset and Brown, Commentary)

For those who insist that Jesus Christ's death on the cross, and His shed blood for the "purchase" of the lost, was only ever intended for the "elect", are proven wrong by yet another clear teaching from the Bible, that Jesus died/purchased/redeemed the WHOLE WORLD WITHOUT EXCEPTION! Why, some will continue to ask, are ALL then not saved? Read what Peter says here, and in other places, because sinners DENY, that is REJECT, what God has done for them! The FREE WILL to "accept/reject" the Gospel Message is very much part of being saved. It is NOT automatic, because some claim to be "elite" and think that God MUST save them!
