    Good evening -

    In 1Samuel tonight we see Saul's disobedience reach a new peak. After a deliberate command from God through Samuel to destroy all living things in his sacking of the Amalekites, Saul spares the king of the Amalekites some of the livestock. He then goes so far as to tell Samuel that he had done so for the purpose of sacrificing these animals to God at a later time. Samuel himself ends up killing the king of Israel's enemy.
    It is interesting in this passage to see that God has true emotions other than anger and pleasure. Verse 15:11 shows that God can grieve.

    In 2Corinthians, Paul pleads with the Corinthians to "open wide their hearts" and recognize the Gospel which he had preached in their city. He speaks of the devices that true Apostles use and how he attempts to maintain a good image so that his ministry would not be discredited.
    He goes further with a warning against affiliating with non-believers. This church had become so susceptible to outside influences and false teachers that Paul instructs them to remain pure with each other.

    In Mark 11:27-33, we see Jesus call the Pharisees on their own trap. Very reminiscent of Proverbs 1:17-18 -- How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds!
    These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves.

    The Pharisees KNEW where they got their authority. But Jesus was not one of them, so where did He think He was getting HIS authority to teach?

    What was the trap here? Jesus had been referring to the Scriptures all along -- that much they could have seen for themselves.

    And so Jesus backs up one step to John's ministry, and asks the Pharisees where John got his authority! When they recognize the counter-trap Jesus skillfully set, they refuse to answer. And Jesus, in response, says basically that if they refuse to answer, so does He.

    Immediately following this response to them He begins the parable of the tenants, which is tomorrow. The parable roundly condemned the Pharisees and teachers of the law, and they recognized that.

    Jesus was influencing people, but there were some friends He wasn't making, and they were already starting to look for a way to arrest Him without incurring the wrath of the people, who believed Him, at least at this time.
