    Christians Must 'Unhitch' Old Testament From Their Faith, Says Andy Stanley

    If the content of this article is correct it puts Andy Stanley in the company of other theologians and pastors that want to reclassify the Old Testament as a secondary form of inspired scripture. I take exception to this statement:

    "Peter, James, Paul elected to unhitch the Christian faith from their Jewish scriptures, and my friends, we must as well."

    This statement could not be further from the truth. The Apostles certainly drew focus away from the Mosaic Law and placed it on Christ but they did not try to unhitch the Christian faith from existing inspired scripture. The author of Hebrews invested a great portion of his time revealing Christ from the Old Testament.

    This is where Dispensationalism run amok takes some segments of Christianity. The bifurcation of Old Testament and New Testament is a dangerous thing. While Andy Stanley did not say the Old Testament is not inspired, he did downplay its importance and assigned it to the dusty part of the bookshelf.

    This is yet another in a series of blunders by this man. We see the results in the followers of such ideas being fragmented in their thoughts.

    This hatred of doctrine and desire to be "led by the Spirit"....looks for gimmicks, shortcuts, and a turning from the truths designed to give us some protection.

    Some of the recent threads echo these ideas....sounds good short term, but it is destructive in it's design.

    The "Spirit-lead" movement puts the individual in charge, not God. How can you argue with someone who claims they are just following the prompting of the Holy Spirit? Even if you show them scripture they will not listen to you.

    If I try...I start in Romans 8 and show being Spirit led was spoken of in reference to mortify sin.

    11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

    12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

    13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

    14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

    I also use 1 cor 2....to show we are given the Spirit to be able to read , meditate and obey scripture as we serve God.

    Failing to establish the solid foundation of the word....will not help the person...so I make it clear that is the battle ground.

    The parts where he denies parts of the OT?....like the creation account?
    Or how he tosses out the ten commandments?

    I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.[2 Timothy 4:1-4]

    Andy Stanley has been attacking the bible for quite a while now. When he said that we don't know of the Christ's resurrection because of the bible, but because of Matthew's first hand account of it(which is recorded in the bible :rolleyes::Whistling), I sent several emails to NPC and got the runaround. I got a link to a 'sermon'(another :rolleyes::Whistling) that didn't answer my question. I sent 3 or 4 emails to them, wanting to converse with Andy Stanley, but only got his personal secretary?

    Andy Stanley is on an unsustainable path and is taking many with him down the same road.

    Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.[Galatians 6:7]

    Andy is mocking God's word. He is attacking it at every turn. If'n he ain't awful careful, God will cut him down if he keeps this up.

    I do not want to move too far off of the OP, but your "battleground" comment is important. In fact, it is the equivalent in importance to the downgrade controversy in the latter second-half of 19th-century in England. The charismatic movement gave birth to the holy spirit movement (I am intentionally not capitalizing holy spirit in relation to the 'holy spirit movement'). In short, the holy spirit movement elevates personal experience over the authority of God's word. What makes this movement so dangerous is that the word of God is effectively abandoned in place of a subjective feeling. Few people are bold enough to challenge another person on whether their feeling is really the work of the Holy Spirit. When you look at many of the charlatans like Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland, and Joyce Meyer; they all trace the impetus of their 'ministries' to the holy spirit movement. I do not place Andy Stanley in their category but I do have to raise the caution flag on his downgrade of the Old Testament. It is a dangerous precedent that other people will take to a further degree. Flawed teaching seldom ends with one teacher.

    The Lord Jesus did not unhitch from the Ot.
    He preached how He was found in it.
    The fact that anyone suggests this demonstrates how defective is their view of scripture itself.
    They are left doing some public speaking on what crosses their fleshy mind.isa.8:20

    I believe the problem is one of extremes. Insofar as Andy's comments, I just don't know. He sometimes says things in ways to spark more attention than his comments deserve and I'm not interested enough to review his actual sermon.

    But there is a point where people become reactionary. Rather than looking at the Old Testament/Covenant as foreshadowing the New, some do seem to define the New Covenant by the Old Covenant. I believe it is in reaction to this error that some go too far by viewing the Old Testament/Old Covenant as obsolete, secondary, or disconnected from God's redemptive plan as a whole.

    Did you listen to the whole sermon?
    Stanley is one of the easiest people in the pulpit to take out of context. He doesn't toss out any of it. I am not a fan of his because he is shallow in his teaching, but it is 100% dishonest to say he "tosses out" anything in The Old Testament.

    Andy was correct. He was dealing with witnessing to postmodern generation who has been taught to not believe in absolute truth. He affirmed the inerrancy of Scripture in the series. His premise was a lperson does not initially have to believe the Ressurrection simply because "The Bible told me so." They can believe it based on massive historical evidence that those closest to Jesus died agonizing deaths because they saw the evidence and believed it. They had no financial gain for doing so. Would they have died for a hoax?
    His point is that the action s of the apostles is beginning point that can be used to eventually bring a person around to believing the inspiration and accuracy of scripture.

    My thoughts exactly... Then there is this from Timothy... Brother Glen:)

    2 Timothy 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;

    4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

    4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

    4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

    Here is a little something extra... So some will not accuse me of not reading the article... Stanley says lets start from the Apostles... I think we should start with the first Apostle... Brother Glen:)

    Hebrews 3:1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;

    Then there is this!

    Revelation 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
