There were two Jewish practices that particularly identified the Jews in the first century: The Sabbath and circumcision. And circumcision became a major bone of contention while the Sabbath did not. This is what makes the silence regarding the Sabbath so significant. When a major change was contemplated, it made waves.

There were Pharisees who had come to believe that Jesus was the Messiah (acts 15;5). Now can you imagine this group of people not being Sabbath keepers as well? It is inconceivable.

Why, then, was the Sabbath not an issue while circumcision was? The answer is simple enough. There was nothing in Paul's work with the Gentiles to change anything regarding the Sabbath.

    It was MADE

Jesus said, "The sabbath was made." It is one of those things that was made. It had to have a MAKER. Who, then, made the Sabbath?

God is the Creator. But it is written in Ephesians 3:9, ". . . God, who created all things by Jesus Christ."

John's Gospel begins: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God . . . ALL THINGS were made by HIM; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. . . . And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John bare witness of him . . ." (John 1:1, 3-4, 14-15).

That "Word" was CHRIST. Christ was with God the Father from eternity. Christ was God! ALL THINGS WERE MADE BY HIM—Jesus Christ! The Sabbath is one of those things that was MADE. So it was Jesus Christ who MADE the Sabbath. God made it through Jesus Christ or by Him!

Notice further: "For by him [Christ] were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible . . . And he is THE HEAD OF THE BODY, THE CHURCH (Col. 1:16, 18).

Very few realize it today—but the Sabbath was MADE BY JESUS CHRIST! No wonder, then, He said plainly that He is LORD also of the Sabbath! (Mark 2:28)

THis is an excellent point. And note that EVEN in the case of circumcision it is not a change from the OT system - it is a correction in the NT to the RIGHT use of the OT command. A command that was never intended for Gentiles even in the OT - but one that the Jews were incorrectly applying to gentiles as of NT times!

Notice the point that Paul makes concerning the Jews and the correct OT laws of God --

This means that EVEN when it is no change at all to the Law of God - but just a correction to errors being promoted about it -- errors never put there by God in the first place -- it STILL made huge waves and needed much "discussion" and clarification!

    In Christ,

    Bob
