Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. (Proverbs 23:31)

    White wine is OK.

    billwald,

think again. "when it moveth itself aright" covers any fermented wine, red or white.

The word 'Look' in that verse does indeed mean 'have no experience with'.

In moderation, without getting drunk, it is okay.

If the Greek word for 'Look' means 'have no experience with', how can one drink in moderation without experiencing it?

There have been no telling how many threads on this subject on this board. There is no point in rehashing the same old stuff. Just find a few of the old threads and you'll find lots of argument made on both sides of the issue.

I voted in your poll and expressed my opinion. The old threads will handle the rest.

    Merry Christmas. [IMG]

There is nothing wrong with drinking in moderation. Getting drunk is not okay.

So what do we do with the word 'look' that means in the hebrew, 'have no experience with'?

I would reccommend all who name the name of Christ and believe it is ok to drink in moderation to read the book, 'Should Christians Drink?: A Case For Total Abstinence by Peter Masters.

It may open a few eyes. Of course, the heart must be open to receive the Word as well.

If the water was bad and I knew it I would easily mix wine with water. Just a few years ago I knew a lady on the mission field whose husband died due to bad water he had drank.

My parents were grape farmers and I have seen wine made and really don't like its taste at all. If one saw it made they might not like it so well either.

So when Jesus changed water into wine at the wedding at Cana, it wasn't really wine? (See John 2:1-11)

    Priscilla Ann,

Not all wine was fermented wine. If you notice, the governor had the wherewithal to recognize the taste of the wine to know it was the best. And yet, the party had 'well drunk' and were out of wine. If they had well drunk fermented wine, they would not have been able to distinguish the taste, as alcohol dulls the taste buds.

Also, due to the discovery of the fortifying process back in the 19th century, alcohol is much stronger today than it was in Jesus' day. The wine of today is 'strong drink compared to the wine of Jesus' day.

Would Jesus have done something that was against His Father's Word? If He did, would He not cease to be the sinless Lamb? The Bible teaches us He did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth.

If you look at law of first mention, the very first time fermented wine was mentioned in the Bible, it brought about a curse to man. The second time, sexual immorality.

Wine, as posted earlier, is a deceiver. One may think it will not hurt him or her, but in reality, it destroys lives, homes and families.

One may say, but in moderation it is not bad.

Can one truthfully say how much is moderate? Jesus said if man looks at a woman to lust after her, he has already committed adultery in his heart. How can we be sure that our desire even to take one sip of alcohol is not lusting for that drink, thereby making it a greater sin in our heart?

Apparently, some think that the sin of 'drunkenness'
in Galatians 5:21c was a prophecy that could have only been fulfilled in the 19th century.

It seems that drunkenness, the excessive use of wine, could not have happened in Jesus days on earth.

It is a view but one without much sense.

According to the World Book Dictionary, the definition for wine is "the juice of grapes (or other fruit) after it has fermented and contains alcohol".

One could very well have gotten drunk in Jesus' day. They had to drink more than one has to today, but they indeed could get drunk. Can this be proven? Yes, in several passages.

The apostles were accused of drunkenness in the upper room in Acts 2.

Paul mentioned drunkenness in several verses in his epistles. From 1 Corinthians to Galatians to Ephesians one can find several references to drunkenness.

If you already have your opinion, why the poll ? So you can preach down on those who think moderate drinking is no sin ?

The World Book Dictionary is not the final authority, God's Word is. Do you know that the Bible speaks of the grape producing wine while it is still on the cluster in Isaiah 65?

The word must not be taken out of context. In many verses it means fermented, in many, it does not. In the verses where wine is fermented, there is always referral to curses or poverty that followed.
