    1Co 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

    1Co 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

    1Co 10:3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat;

1Co 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

1Co 10:5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

1Co 10:6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

1Co 10:7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

1Co 10:8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

1Co 10:9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

1Co 10:10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

1Co 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

1Co 10:12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

1Co 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

1Co 10:14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

1Co 10:15 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

1Co 10:16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

1Co 10:17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

1Co 10:18 Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

1Co 10:19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

1Co 10:20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

1Co 10:21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

1Co 10:22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

1Co 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

1Co 10:24 Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.

1Co 10:25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:

1Co 10:26 For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.

1Co 10:27 If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.

1Co 10:28 But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:

1Co 10:29 Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?

1Co 10:30 For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

1Co 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

1Co 10:32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

1Co 10:33 Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

Verses 1-5 is Paul’s explanation to the church in Corinth as to the reason he is encouraging them to “run in such a way that they may win”. This means that they could fall into error. Paul introduces the faithful of those who have gone before, noting that this was not indicative of the majority. God was displeased with most of them and they perished in the wilderness.

Verse 6 tells us that this is an example to them (the church in Corinth and I believe to us as well). We are not to act as they acted (they were idolaters, immoral, belligerent, and grumblers). God dealt with them for their iniquity as an example to us (technically to the church at Corinth).

Therefore (because of the example of the failure of Israel in the Wilderness in the previous verses) let him who think he stands take heed that he does not fall. This is key to our previous discussion. Upon what will we stand? Tradition, human understanding, theories, theology, tradition, etc.? OR God’s very Word? I insist the latter.

No temptation has overtaken us except as is common to mankind. God will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can endure but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also. Therefore – because our temptation is common to mankind and God will provide a way to escape without falling (without sinning) – we should flee from idolatry

Verse 16-17 appeals to the believers status or state in Christ. We are sharers in the blood of Christ (the crucifixion with hope in the resurrection, as is a very common theme with Paul). We cannot share in idolatry and claim to be sharers in Christ (think of Christ’s comments about serving two masters).

All things are lawful but not all things are profitable, not all things edify. We are not to seek our own good but the good of our neighbor. We are to “eat anything that is sold in the meat market” (here a reference to meat that had been sacrificed to idols as was one important issue in Corinth) without asking for our conscience sake but for the other man’s sake.

The interesting aspect of this passage is how many err in viewing the topic the food and drink itself. Some ignorantly take the first part of the passage and conclude it is teaching to have nothing to do with the things “offered to idols”. Others ignorantly take the second part and claim this means they are free to eat and drink with liberty.

But the crux of the passage is not the “meat” but the conscious of the neighbor. Using the issue of the day, we ask if the food was sacrificed for the sake of the neighbor who would view it idolatry to eat, not because of our own conscious. We are to look out for the weaker brother.

Whatever we do we do for God. We give no offense to either Jews or Greeks or the Church.

In today’s context we do not face the same issues in terms of food offered to idols and causing no offense in eating with the Gentile or refraining for the sake of the Jew. The principle is the same but contextualized differently.

As an example, I would never insist a person wear shorts to church or wear a suit. There are churches I attend where I wear a suit in order not to offend. There are others where I dress casually so as not to offend. And there are a few where I wear jeans so as not to offend. I have a preference, but my preference does not matter.

Jon, thank you for sharing your thoughts with this overview. You make several really good points. There are two that stick out ... 1. "Therefore (because of the example of the failure of Israel in the Wilderness in the previous verses) let him who think he stands take heed that he does not fall. This is key to our previous discussion. Upon what will we stand? Tradition, human understanding, theories, theology, tradition, etc.? OR God’s very Word?" I insist the latter. 2. So many people error concerning this passage.

With this said, there is much more to this passage than what meets the eye. What I desire is for us to stay on point and do a thorough study of this passage, and get into chewing the meat of each verse, including delving into the passage in Exodus, as well as Apostle Paul's other mention of the provocation in the wilderness in Hebrews. Let's allow for this study to take it's course without rushing through it. On one hand, we understand the doctrine of Eternal Security, which is the assurance and confidence of the Believer, and yet on the other hand, there are a great number of people that misinterpret both this passage, and the parallel passage in Hebrews to suggest that a person can lose his or her salvation, and sorely teach falsely, a "works salvation" including "water baptism is necessary for salvation". So, this these are some important reasons to carefully go through each related passage, so as to fully grasp WHY they were overthrown in the wilderness, and WHY this is so important for the Church to understand today, as it is indeed key to what we were discussing on the other thread, as Churches are mixing in things that are idolatrous, and afterwards, we can take this to a greater level for better understanding of John 1:10-13 and the Seven Letters to the Seven Churches in Revelation.

    Is this agreeable with you?

Great! In verse 3, it is written: "And did all eat the same spiritual meat;"

What was that same spiritual meat?

It is an Old Testament reference. When Israel was in the wilderness they ate of the same spiritual food (βρῶμα) and drank from the same spiritual rock. On the surface this is manna and water. The significance, however, is the Source (the remander of the verse).

They ate of the same spirit, drank from the same spiritual rock, which is Christ. And God was displeased with most of them. With all they were given they wanted something else. They turned aside.

Ok. Your answer seems like the logical answer because they did eat manna in the wilderness, but that is not the correct answer.

The correct answer is the Gospel. Would you like to learn why and how, we can know with absolute certainty, that is the correct answer? and where you can find the correct answer in The Holy Bible? :)

I didn't want to go to Hebrews just yet because I wanted for us to examine the provocation first, but, spoiler alert! We will go ahead with a preview of Hebrews 4:12, the parallel passage, as as Apostle Paul confirmed that the Gospel was preached to them, and we also get a highlight of the sin of unblief, relating to the provocation, then we will progress into examinination and discussion of the provocation after we examine the Gospel that was preached to them in Exodus 12 It is necessary to mention that there was significance to the manna that was eaten later, as reference is made to it by Jesus in the Accounts of the Gospel, but Jesus said that He is true bread. But, as per the Gospel, we know it was hidden in the Old Testament Scriptures, such is the case in Genesis 22 and in Psalms, and so forth; but as specifically relating to 1Corinthians 10 & Hebrew 4, the go to passage is Exodus 12 where the Gospel was preached; the Lamb, the Blood, and so forth, as pertaining to the Passover, of which we know Jesus Christ is The Lamb. The blood placed on each side of the door and above is the picture of the cross, and we know that Jesus also said that He is the door, as He preached of all of these things. Israel was led by the cloud and passed through the Red Sea in Exodus 13-14 In chapter 15 Israel learned the song that God is a man and is our salvation; Jesus Christ is God in the flesh; He is our salvation. These passages are so very powerful. And yet, there were many that did not believe the Gospel that was preached to them, and Jesus was with them, just as Jesus was with Israel when He was crucified. Just talking about this is moving to me, when we consider all that Jesus did for us. I am posting the full context of Exodus 12 with a portion of 13 in a two part post. I strongly encourage prayerful reading of the Holy Book of Exodus.

Exo 15:3 The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.

    Part 1 of 2

Heb 4:1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

Heb 4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

Exo 12:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,

Exo 12:2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.

Exo 12:3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:

Exo 12:4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.

Exo 12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:

Exo 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

Exo 12:7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.

Exo 12:8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

Exo 12:9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.

Exo 12:10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.

Exo 12:11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover.

Exo 12:12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.

Exo 12:13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

Exo 12:14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

Exo 12:15 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.

Exo 12:16 And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you.

Exo 12:17 And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.

Exo 12:18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even.

Exo 12:19 Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land.

Exo 12:20 Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread.

Exo 12:21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover.

Exo 12:22 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.

Exo 12:23 For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.

Exo 12:24 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever.

    Part 2 of 2

Exo 12:25 And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service.

Exo 12:26 And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you,
What mean ye by this service?

Exo 12:27 That ye shall say,
It is the sacrifice of the LORD'S passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.

Exo 12:28 And the children of Israel went away,
and did as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.

Exo 12:29 And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.

Exo 12:30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where
    there was not one dead.

Exo 12:31 And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the LORD, as ye have said.

Exo 12:32 Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also.

Exo 12:33 And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead
    men.

Exo 12:34 And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneadingtroughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders.

Exo 12:35 And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment:

Exo 12:36 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them
such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians.

Exo 12:37 And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children.

Exo 12:38 And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle.

Exo 12:39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual.

Exo 12:40 Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years.

Exo 12:41 And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass,
that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.

Exo 12:42 It is a night to be much observed unto the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this
is that night of the LORD to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations.

Exo 12:43 And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron, This is the ordinance of the passover: There shall no stranger eat thereof:

Exo 12:44 But every man's servant that is bought for money, when thou hast circumcised him, then shall he eat thereof.

Exo 12:45 A foreigner and an hired servant shall not eat thereof.

Exo 12:46 In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.

Exo 12:47 All the congregation of Israel shall keep it.

Exo 12:48 And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof.

Exo 12:49 One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you.

Exo 12:50 Thus did all the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.

Exo 12:51 And it came to pass the selfsame day,
that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies.
    .......
Exo 13:17 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt:

Exo 13:18 But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt.

Exo 13:19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.

Exo 13:20 And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness.

Exo 13:21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:

Exo 13:22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

Yet you possibly could sometimes be standing on human tradition of what your church or someone else taught you or on your own imperfect human understanding or private interpretations instead of God's very word unless you claim to be infallible and perfect in your understanding of the Scriptures.

I have a two part post in response you what you shared:
    Part 1 of 2

That is the problem that we are sadly seeing today in a lot of Churches. People are relying on what men say rather than what is written in The Holy Bible, and that is why so many have turned their faith away from The Lord Jesus Christ, instead embracing false prophets, false teachers, other antichrist religions and their false religious practices such as Yoga which is the express worship of Satan.

Apostle Paul defined how Believers get faith in the Gospel Romans 10:16-17 by defining that faith comes by hearing, and further defined that hearing came only by the word of God.

Rom 10:16-17 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

We are taught in The Holy Bible not to rely upon our own understanding, but instead upon every utterance from the mouth of God.

Pro 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Pro 3:7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

Pro 3:8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

Pro 3:9-10 Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

Pro 3:11-12 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

Pro 3:13-15 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.

There is much to be learned in the Proverbs. We also get the contrast of those that reject instruction from God.

Pro 15:25 The LORD will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow.

Pro 15:26 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.

Pro 15:27 He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.

Pro 15:28 The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.

Pro 15:29 The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.

Pro 15:30-31 The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat. The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.

Pro 15:32 He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

Pro 15:33 The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.

Pro 19:8 He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.

Pro 28:10 Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession.

Pro 28:11 The rich man is wise in his own conceit; but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out.

Children of God are taught by God by the indwelling of The Holy Spirit with the hearing of His holy words as they are written in The Holy Bible.

1Jn 2:26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.

1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

I recommend prayerful reading and study of the full context of the Proverbs.

    Pro 1:1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

    Pro 1:2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

    Pro 1:3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

Pro 1:4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

Pro 1:5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

Pro 1:6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

Pro 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Pro 9:9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

Pro 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Pro 26:12 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

None of the verses that you cited say that it is not possible for you to lean on your own understanding or to be standing on human tradition. The verses do not teach that you are perfect and infallible in your understanding of the Bible. Are you claiming that it is not possible for you to be wise in your own eyes? You also may lean on the understanding of an exclusive group of Church of England critics in 1611 and on a human tradition concerning the KJV.
