Jon, thank you for sharing your thoughts with this overview. You make several really good points. There are two that stick out ... 1. "Therefore (because of the example of the failure of Israel in the Wilderness in the previous verses) let him who think he stands take heed that he does not fall. This is key to our previous discussion. Upon what will we stand? Tradition, human understanding, theories, theology, tradition, etc.? OR God’s very Word?" I insist the latter. 2. So many people error concerning this passage.

With this said, there is much more to this passage than what meets the eye. What I desire is for us to stay on point and do a thorough study of this passage, and get into chewing the meat of each verse, including delving into the passage in Exodus, as well as Apostle Paul's other mention of the provocation in the wilderness in Hebrews. Let's allow for this study to take it's course without rushing through it. On one hand, we understand the doctrine of Eternal Security, which is the assurance and confidence of the Believer, and yet on the other hand, there are a great number of people that misinterpret both this passage, and the parallel passage in Hebrews to suggest that a person can lose his or her salvation, and sorely teach falsely, a "works salvation" including "water baptism is necessary for salvation". So, this these are some important reasons to carefully go through each related passage, so as to fully grasp WHY they were overthrown in the wilderness, and WHY this is so important for the Church to understand today, as it is indeed key to what we were discussing on the other thread, as Churches are mixing in things that are idolatrous, and afterwards, we can take this to a greater level for better understanding of John 1:10-13 and the Seven Letters to the Seven Churches in Revelation.

Ok. Your answer seems like the logical answer because they did eat manna in the wilderness, but that is not the correct answer.

The correct answer is the Gospel. Would you like to learn why and how, we can know with absolute certainty, that is the correct answer? and where you can find the correct answer in The Holy Bible?

 

I didn't want to go to Hebrews just yet because I wanted for us to examine the provocation first, but, spoiler alert! We will go ahead with a preview of Hebrews 4:12, the parallel passage, as as Apostle Paul confirmed that the Gospel was preached to them, and we also get a highlight of the sin of unblief, relating to the provocation, then we will progress into examinination and discussion of the provocation after we examine the Gospel that was preached to them in Exodus 12 It is necessary to mention that there was significance to the manna that was eaten later, as reference is made to it by Jesus in the Accounts of the Gospel, but Jesus said that He is true bread. But, as per the Gospel, we know it was hidden in the Old Testament Scriptures, such is the case in Genesis 22 and in Psalms, and so forth; but as specifically relating to 1Corinthians 10 & Hebrew 4, the go to passage is Exodus 12 where the Gospel was preached; the Lamb, the Blood, and so forth, as pertaining to the Passover, of which we know Jesus Christ is The Lamb. The blood placed on each side of the door and above is the picture of the cross, and we know that Jesus also said that He is the door, as He preached of all of these things. Israel was led by the cloud and passed through the Red Sea in Exodus 13-14 In chapter 15 Israel learned the song that God is a man and is our salvation; Jesus Christ is God in the flesh; He is our salvation. These passages are so very powerful. And yet, there were many that did not believe the Gospel that was preached to them, and Jesus was with them, just as Jesus was with Israel when He was crucified. Just talking about this is moving to me, when we consider all that Jesus did for us. I am posting the full context of Exodus 12 with a portion of 13 in a two part post. I strongly encourage prayerful reading of the Holy Book of Exodus.

That is the problem that we are sadly seeing today in a lot of Churches. People are relying on what men say rather than what is written in The Holy Bible, and that is why so many have turned their faith away from The Lord Jesus Christ, instead embracing false prophets, false teachers, other antichrist religions and their false religious practices such as Yoga which is the express worship of Satan.

Apostle Paul defined how Believers get faith in the Gospel Romans 10:16-17 by defining that faith comes by hearing, and further defined that hearing came only by the word of God.


Rom 10:16-17 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

We are taught in The Holy Bible not to rely upon our own understanding, but instead upon every utterance from the mouth of God.


Pro 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.


Pro 3:7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.


Pro 3:8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.


Pro 3:9-10 Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.


Pro 3:11-12 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.


Pro 3:13-15 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.

There is much to be learned in the Proverbs. We also get the contrast of those that reject instruction from God.

Pro 15:25 The LORD will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow.


Pro 15:26 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.


Pro 15:27 He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.


Pro 15:28 The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.


Pro 15:29 The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.


Pro 15:30-31 The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat. The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.


Pro 15:32 He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.


Pro 15:33 The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.

Pro 19:8 He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.


Pro 28:10 Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession.


Pro 28:11 The rich man is wise in his own conceit; but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out.

Children of God are taught by God by the indwelling of The Holy Spirit with the hearing of His holy words as they are written in The Holy Bible.


1Jn 2:26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.

1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

Pro 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Pro 9:9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
