April - Reading 22

Good morning -

Yesterday we completed the readings for the Book of Judges. As you can see, Israel had transgressed to a point where one of its very own, the tribe of Benjamin had commited an act almost identical to the sins of Gommorah centuries before. As a result, the other eleven tribes rose up against Benjamin and went to war. Only 600 men from this tribe escaped death and had it not beeen for God allowing this, the tribe of Benjamin would have been completely erased. The Book ends with the motif that had been repeated all through the Book, "In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit."

Today, we will begin the Book of Ruth, a far gentler and much more personal look at the lives of an individual family of this same time period.

Marks's account of Peter's confession lacks the overall drama of the account in Matthew but it is significant that this is one of only seven times in this Gospel that Jesus is referred to as the Christ.

In 1Corinthians I want to point out that Paul's instructions concerning women speaking in church in verse 34 & 35 is to instruct in orderly, reverent worship. This is not a ban on women speaking in church altogether as is attested to in verse 11:5 of this same Book. The notion that women must keep totally silent in church is an erronious notion.
