This subject has been brought up many times before - but we have some new members - so lets for it again

For the purpose of this discussion - we will limit all Scripture reference to the New Testament

    1) Does God ever allow divorce
    2) Does God ever approve of divorce
    3) Can God ever bless a re-marriage when at least on person is divorced.
    4) If a couple have a child together while single - would it be adultery if either one married someone else.
    5) Is an annulment basically the same as a divorce (after consummation)
    6) If the re-marriage happened before salvation - is it still adultery?
    7) A couple who re-married - should they divorce their current spouse and re-marry their first spouse?
7A) If # 7 is yes - would it make a difference if the re-married couple had a child together?
    8) Do you recognize a common law marriage? (legal in 8 States/Commonwealths)

MT 19:9. Remarriage after divorce for any other reason constitutes adultery.

An act of fornication does not create a marriage.
As for 7, either action would be wrong.

Marriage is in the eyes of God. Do you think He honors fornication? Do you think He changes His mind based on what a state legislature says? You think He recognizes homosexual marriage because SCOTUS says it is legal?

    So you're God?

    1 Corinthians 6:15-17 NLT
Don’t you realize that your bodies are actually parts of Christ? Should a man take his body, which is part of Christ, and join it to a prostitute? Never! [16] And don’t you realize that if a man joins himself to a prostitute, he becomes one body with her? For the Scriptures say, “The two are united into one.”

I don't think his idea of right and wrong is based upon what human's popular conception of right and wrong is.

Do you think "I now pronounce you husband and wife." has some supernatural power? If so, what's your scripture for that?

Based on the 1Cor6 passage, does this indicate that premarital fornication is tantamount to marriage, since "the two become one"?

And would this then preclude such a person from ever marrying anyone but that initial woman or prostitute?

And what if that woman/prostitute herself had already had many partners?

WWPS - - what would Paul say?

Lots of hypotheticals, but probably happening every day somewhere.

Generally speaking, tradition at the time meant the person you slept with was the person you were married to, but since most sex back then would be more likely to lead to pregnancy, "casual sex" just did not occur like it does now. And with polygamy things simply get complicated.

I would say that marrying a prostitute is a bad idea. Paul does give cause for divorce in the case of marriage to an unbeliever.

Things are complicated. But at the same time they are not. A person with multiple children from multiple previous living spouses should not be marrying the naive virgin in a church.

Women who sleep around and have children while remaining single should not be "getting a pass" while the pastor berates teenage boys on the sin of masturbation.

There is a great amount of silliness I see in churches nowadays. Part of this is because they are getting their ideas from the gnosticism of Augustine instead of the Bible. The gnostic beliefs pervert what the Biblical beliefs of some are.

These are the base Biblical belief IMO.

    1. People should remain in monogamous relationships.
    2. Whenever 1 is not possible or overly difficult, decisions should be made with justice, mercy, and faith being the guiding values.

    Genesis 24:67 NLT
And Isaac brought Rebekah into his mother Sarah’s tent, and she became his wife. He loved her deeply, and she was a special comfort to him after the death of his mother.

    Genesis 29:22-30 NLT
So Laban invited everyone in the neighborhood and prepared a wedding feast. [23] But that night, when it was dark, Laban took Leah to Jacob, and he slept with her. [24] (Laban had given Leah a servant, Zilpah, to be her maid.) [25] But when Jacob woke up in the morning—it was Leah! “What have you done to me?” Jacob raged at Laban. “I worked seven years for Rachel! Why have you tricked me?” [26] “It’s not our custom here to marry off a younger daughter ahead of the firstborn,” Laban replied. [27] “But wait until the bridal week is over; then we’ll give you Rachel, too—provided you promise to work another seven years for me.” [28] So Jacob agreed to work seven more years. A week after Jacob had married Leah, Laban gave him Rachel, too. [29] (Laban gave Rachel a servant, Bilhah, to be her maid.) [30] So Jacob slept with Rachel, too, and he loved her much more than Leah. He then stayed and worked for Laban the additional seven years.

    1 Corinthians 5:5 NLT
Then you must throw this man out and hand him over to Satan so that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be saved on the day the Lord returns.

    2 Corinthians 2:5-8 NLT
I am not overstating it when I say that the man who caused all the trouble hurt all of you more than he hurt me. [6] Most of you opposed him, and that was punishment enough. [7] Now, however, it is time to forgive and comfort him. Otherwise he may be overcome by discouragement. [8] So I urge you now to reaffirm your love for him.

    1) Because of fornication: Matthew 5:30-32; Matthew 19:8-9.
    2) Not in the sense of it being a good thing or the best resolution: Mark 10:11-12.
    3) What do you mean by “bless”?
    4) Having a child together does not equal marriage, so no – but if they have a child together ideally they should be married.
    5) Yes.
    6) It seems God’s ideal for marriage is for all the human race, so ye.
    7) No.
    8) No, that is a legal construct. I do, however, recognize a marriage based on a man and woman covenanting together to be husband and wife (IOW, it doesn’t take government approval).
