'God gave us free will and common sense'...

Lindsay Graham mocks Mitt Romney as the senator insists God won't judge him | Daily Mail Online

The common belief in free will, as Martin Luther concluded, is a lie of Satan.

Use whatever term you wish to describe your "will", free of whatever, scripture consistently instructs the child of God to submit his will to that of his Father, God. We are to follow Christ's example in submitting our will as He did. Additionally, the following scripture thoroughly repudiates its practice.

Jas 4:13 ESV - Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit"--

Jas 4:14 ESV - yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.

Jas 4:15 ESV - Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that."

Jas 4:16 ESV - As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.

Jas 4:17 ESV - So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

Gal 6:7 ESV - Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.

I pray that the Holy Spirit will convict you and that you repent.

So you're saying Mitt Romney and Lindsay Graham's votes in President Trump's Senate trial were not free will decisions?

I used to hear a Baptist minister on the radio constantly calling for your "free will" contribution to his ministry.

    John 7:17
If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.

    1 Timothy 2:4

Who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

    Mark 8:34

And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

    Deuteronomy 30:19

I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live,

All of those passages indicate that man has the ability to choose - that is called "free will".

I do not believe there is such a thing as freewill. As scripture clearly states, we Christians, as Jesus demonstrated, should submit their will to God, our Father. If we don't, we are engaging in an arrogant act in defiance of God's revealed will.

Not an easy standard to keep as our sin nature is pervasive.

Thankfully: 1Jo 1:9 KJV - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I would like to know what your definition of freewill is.

Mitt Romney made a decision to vote for a guilty verdict in the Trump Senate trial. Are you saying Romney does not have the ability to make that choice?

Lindsay Graham made a decision to vote for a not guilty verdict in the Trump Senate trial. Are you saying Graham does not have the ability to make that choice?

The ability to make a choice.

Yes, all individuals, including politicians, make choices. Thereby they exercise their will.

However, scripture cautions Christians to consider God's will for the decisions they make.

Jas 4:15 ESV - Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that."

I, when I am giving account, would prefer my decisions to be in accordance with God's will. If they are not, He, being true to Himself, will by His grace forgive me and not condemn me. Praise God!!!

    Exactly.

The classic Calvinist idea of free will is that humans don't have free will to make a choice for God. The OP seems to be saying that nobody has the freewill to make a choice for anything. Free will is a lie of Satan.

You said in the title of this thread that free will was a lie. You said in your first post that free will was a lie of Satan.

Now you are saying that you make free will decisions and hope that they align with God's will.

Just what are you trying to say?

    Neither can you do good
who are accustomed to doing evil.

Without Him you can do nothing (good)

We all make choices based on our will. But our will is not "free" as I understand the meaning of the word in this context.

In this context, to me, free means without influence or consequence.

    Your definition:
I standby my first thru current post. I never said anyone had or has freewill.

The warden gives the condemned prisoner three choices: hanging, firing squad or guillotine. By your definition, he has freewill.

People make choices shaped by the environment they experience. Since our environment is shaped by forces beyond our control, our choices can not logically be free except within constraints. None of use ever experience the exact same things. God's Holy Spirit shapes our walk by Him teaching us, as do worthless idols shape the walk of the ungodly.

    Jeremiah 18:15
Yet my people have forgotten me; they burn incense to worthless idols, which made them stumble in their ways, in the ancient paths. They made them walk in byways, on roads not built up.

Isaiah 30:20-22 New International Version (NIV)
20 Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. 21 Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” 22 Then you will desecrate your idols overlaid with silver and your images covered with gold; you will throw them away like a menstrual cloth and say to them, “Away with you!”

    Isaiah 2:3
Many peoples will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.” The law will go out from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
