"Was John the Baptist - really a Baptist" ?

    There are those who insist that John the Baptist, was actually a Baptist.
    Interesting - seeing that Baptists did not even become a group until the 1600's.

    And Anabaptis do not have a lot in common with Baptists. Granted, they may be
    spiritual ancestor of modern Baptists, Mennonites, and Quakers. -- The first
    Anabaptists were formed in the early 1500's -

    So if Baptists and predecessos did not arrive until the 1500's - then there is no way that
    John the Baptist was an actual Baptists.

    No, John the Baptist, was not a "Baptist." Christian Baptism was not even instituted in his lifetime (he was executed before Christ was). John did a baptism of repentance, a purification ritual. John the Baptizer would be better understood.

    Maybe, John 4:1-2, ". . . When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) . . . ." It is my understanding though, John was the last of the OT prophets.

    John was a prophet in Israel who implemented a water baptism whereby people made public proclamation that they were repenting. His water baptism had nothing to do with salvation.

    The one baptism that is effectual is the Holy Spirit's immersion of the adopted person into Christ Jesus.

    Not a Baptist, but the last Prophet of the OT eras, and the forerunner of the Messiah!

    There were Anabaptists in the early centuries. The Montanists rebaptised those who came from outside their sect, and those from outside, rebaptised those who came from the Montanists.

    Did anyone mention that John is the greatest of all the prophets?

    Matthew 11:11 (KJV) Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

    I don' know if Acts 19:3-5 has any bearing?

    Those who only had John's baptism were rebaptised in the name of Jesus. On the other hand, John was called John the Baptist.

    John the Baptizer was a Jewish priest, son of a Jewish priest, probably of the sect of the Essenes that believed Temple worship had been corrupted.

    His ministry was transitional, foreshadowing the time when temple worship would cease and forgiveness would come not by yearly sacrifices but by faith in Jesus, who made the final sacrifice for sin.

    His baptism was not Christian Baptism and he was not a “baptist” in the way we use that word.

    No, he was not a Baptist, he was the Baptist. :)

    John was a forerunner of Christ, in the beginning of a new era.
    • Mark 1:1-3 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; as it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
    • Luke 16:16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.
    John was sent from God. His baptism was from heaven.
    • John 1:6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
    • Mark 11:30 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.
    The disciples of Jesus baptized under their Lord’s direction even while John was still baptizing.
    • John 4:1-2 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)
    John’s baptism was not “defective.” It is the only water baptism the apostles ever had. The Ephesians were not “rebaptized” because they were baptized by John, but because they were baptized unto John’s baptism. Apollos knew only the baptism of John. He was taught, but not “rebaptized” (Acts 18:25).
    • John 1:35-37 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; and looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
    • Acts 19:3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.
