In our reading yesterday, we finished the Book of Joshua. It was rounded out with a farewell speech by Joshua himself. He gives a quick synopsis of the events from Egypt to their present and, just as Moses had done, warns the people to stay true to God. The people respond that they will.It is interesting that Johua is noted as recording things into the Book of Law (v. 26). It leads me to believe that he is the author of the end of the Torah, since reason dictates that Moses could not have penned his own death.

I really like the way that Joshua ends with the burial of Joseph's bones. It was so long ago that Joseph was sold by his brothers and thus started the time in Egypt, but as a great piece of literature does, the story circles back and Joseph, or at least his remains, end up back in Canaan.

The reading in Mark contained the only account in the Gospels of the Parable of the Growing Seed (v.26-29). It is believed that this parable is meant to show how Christ came into the world as a little baby, grew up and surrounded Himself with a dozen ordinary men, and then this story becomes the salvation of the world.

This reading also contains the account of the calming of the sea. Mark's telling of this story is the most human of the gospels, describing Christ as "asleep on a cushion" at the time. As I said at the beginning of the month, Mark is a very Gentle Gospel.

Finally in 1Corinthians, Paul is informing the church at Corinth that if our actions cast doubt of the faith on newer believers, then by all means, avoid those actions. The membership at Corinth had evidently been well instructed and as a result they knew what was allowed and what was not. However, Paul warns them not to allow their freedom to cause the weaker folks in the faith to stumble.
