    Good evening -

In Judges tonight we met three more of the judges: Tola, Jair and Jephthah. Jephthah was a social outcast being the son of a prostitute. He flees his home and becomes the leader of a band of mercenaries in Tob. The Jews, after having turned to baal worship and other false gods fall under oppression of the Philistines and came under attack by the Ammonites.

Jephthah is approached by a council of elders and is promised a ruling position if he defeats the Ammonites. Under the guidance of God he does but he promises God a sacrifice of the first thing he sees exiting his tent upon his return. Unfortunately, his daughter becomes the sacrifice.

Now this was confusing to me. It actually appears that Japhthah sacrifices his daughter to God. This is totally out of character with the rest of scripture. It is possible that in the two months following his return when his daughter laments with her friends he repented and recognized his duty according to God's will but we are not told that he did. Interesting.

In Mark, notice that the disciples hearts were "hard" so they did not understand the signifigance of the events they were witnessing. This same description is used often for Christ's enemies.

In 1Corinthians we read Paul's instrucions concerning the Lord's Supper. It appears that the church made an "agape meal" of this event but there was no unity to it, it was more like a free-for-all. Paul admonishes the church telling them that this is just one more of their divisions and reminds them that the meal is a remembrance to Christ. He then warns them that eating this communion unworthily is sinning. Paul rounds out the chapter by telling the Corinthians that he will give further instruction when he arrives. Unfortunately, we have no record of these instructions.

    May God bless you

    - Clint
