Good evening -

Tonight in 1Samuel, we looked in to two different scenes. The first was the calling of Samuel. We see that he is no longer a child but is also not yet a man. Samuel was unaware that it was the Lord's voice calling him and goes to Eli three times before the old man catches on to what's happening. Samuel is the priest that the unnamed prophet cited in 2:35 as we read last night.

The second scene that we see is the war between Israel and the Philistines. The Hebrews think that they can defeat the oposition by use of the Ark of the Covenant but they soon see that it is not the symbol of God that gives them power, it is God Himself. After the Ark is captured God shows His power to the enemies of Israel by causing major health problems and the symbolic acts against Dakon. The Philistines soon see that they can not safely posses the Ark and tomorrow we will see Its return.

In 2Corinthians, Paul is explaining to the church of Corinth that his plans have changed since he had told them that he would visit. It is possible that Paul needed to go into such a lengthy explanation because his opponents in Corinth may have used this change in itenerary to point out some flaw in his message, thus the "yes - no" passages.

Good morning -

It struck me as I read 1Samuel that in verse 3:3 a "temple" is mentioned. Upon cross-referncing, I found that this domicile was also spoken of in verse 1:9 of this Book where it is said to have a doorpost. This is the very first mention of a temple of the God of Abraham in the Bible. Until this point in time, the Jews had been using the Tabernacle, which was by neccessity, a mobile edifice. At some point during the time of Joshua or the Judges, the Israelites added to the Tabernacle giving it more permanence and modifying it into a structure that could be classified as a Temple. We lost touch with many of the religious articles spoken of in the final chapters of Exodus during the time of the Judges. Even the Ark was mentioned only once in Judges 20:27.

Also in yesterday's reading of 1Samuel you will notice that verse 2:26 was borrowed by the author of Luke in verse 2:52 of the Book that bears his name to describe the growth of Christ. The parallel, of course, being that as Samuel grew and established the Jewish Kingdom, so too Christ grew and established His Heavenly Kingdom.
