Good evening -

Today's schedule began the Book of Lamentations, an incredibly intricate Book of poetry.
We cannot be 100%certain of the author of Lamentations though Jewish and Christian traditions point to Jeremiah. This notion is supported by the vocabulary and style of the Book as well as the similariry in the style and vocabulary of the Book of Jeremiah.
I say that the book is intricate because of its incredibly regimented format. I will quote te NIV Study Bible' comments on this:

Lamentations focuses on hope in the midst of crisis. It is traditionally read on the ninth day of Ab by Orthodox Jews as that is the accepted anniversary of the destruction of the Temple. It is also read by many at modern Jerusalem's Wailing Wall. It is also used in the final three days of Holy week in traditional Catholic services.

In John today we see some of Christ's disciples deserting Him upon hearing His teachings of the Bread of Heaven. For those Jews it may have very well been a very confusing teaching in that blood was forbidden for consumption as far back as the Noahic Covenant (Genesis 9:4), much less the thought of drinking REAL human blood! John is quick to point out by quoting Christ in verse 6:65 that this is evidence of the nature of the elect.

In 1Peter today we read more comfort for those who are persecuted. To me this passage serves as avery good bridge between the spiritual teachings of Paul and the good deeds teachings of James. In all things, strive to be a good witness, a ggod Christian and a good person. It should also be noted that verse 4:6 is not referring to preaching the Gospel to the currently deceased. The Scriptures are clear that death is the cut off (Hebrews 9:27). Instead, this refers to the preaching of the past while those people still lived. The word "now" is inserted in some modern text to show that the preaching did not occur after death.

Song of Songs

Song of Songs 5:8-10; 16; 6:1-3 The Shepherd’s Charms

Returning or being returned to the harem, the young maiden pleads with her peers to help her find the shepherd, for she is sick not from the beating but with love. The women there ask her, perhaps in a taunting way, what is so great about this shepherd. The maiden then launches into a rather lengthy description of the many qualities she admires about the shepherd.

The women of the harem then taunt the young girl in verse 1 saying that now that they know how handsome the man is, they will personally assist her in finding him. The maiden, however, is undaunted. She declares in verse 3 that it does not matter if they do find him. She is completely confident that he is as faithful to her as she is to him.
