In Ezekiel today we see the prophet draw an allegory of Israel to a woman. The analogy begins right at the birth before the umbilical cord is even cut. The baby has been abandoned without care until its savior comes and cleans it off and raises it. This synopsis of Jewish history shows not only the disobedience of Israel but also the ingratitude.

One note in John tonight: the term "lifted up" in verse 8:28 is usually used in the Gospels to show the exaltation of Christ, but John here uses it as an indication of the crucifixion yet to come.

In 2Peter today we see a passage that shows an argument against "once saved, always saved" doctrine. The text indicates that one can indeed turn away from the way of salvation. However, for the New Testament to harmonize, we must view this passage as the person not being "genuinely" saved. John 10:27-30 and Romans 8:28-39 definitely indicate that once a person is brought to salvation, that is where they will remain.

2Peter 2:17-22 The Inevitable Doom of the False Teachers

Peter uses a simile of two sources of water that benefit no one. They promise blessing for those who thirst but they are unable to deliver what they promise. They offer freedom from evil but they are enslaved to corruption. The hypocritical nature of one who is a slave offering freedom

Verse 20 begins an exploration of a hypothetical situation in which one has escaped the defilement of sin through a true knowledge of Christ, and fall from that state, then he would be far worse off than when he first began. This Passage bears a strong similarity to Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 12 & Luke 11 in which a demon returning to a cured demoniac will find a well-ordered but vacant dwelling. One delivered from evil by a call from Christ is a passive participant. God extends grace before we respond with faith. It is if that faith is not embraced that Peter here explores. If one rejects the standards of behavior taught by the Christian faith and returns to their pre-Christian behavior, they are as despicable as a dog returning to its vomit or a pig that has been cleaned returning to its wallow. They are both sick and filthy. The dog analogy is from Proverbs 26, the hog proverb may have also been a known saying.
