Once again, good evening -

In Lamentations today we see the core of the theological message of this Book presented in verses 3:21-26. As horrible as the destruction of Jerusalem seemed to those involved, it served the purpose of teaching believers the lesson of disobedience equalling punishment. The author amidst the horrors described in this Book recognizes that the exile was occuring for the sake of Jerusalem.

In John, Christ teaches at the feast of the contradictory nature of the legalism that had crept into the Law by using circumcision as the example. He showed that circumcision, the sign of the Abrahamic Covenant, would still be performed on the Sabbath, the sign of the Siniatic Covenant. This is not to say that Christ felt that the Sabbath should not be observed (in His time) but that the Jewish Law had become so rigid that acts of mercy and healing being forbidden were a contradiction to God's purpose.

1Peter today gives advice to the elders and young men. In 5:1 Peter shifts gears from his previous chapters speaking as an Apostle and addresses the elders as his peers. The analogy of the shepherd may very well have been Peter's recalling of his reinstatement in John 21:15-17.

Song of Songs 8:6-7 The Power and Cost of Love

When desire produced by love overcomes the emotions, it can wreak havoc in one’s life. That is the message the maiden gives her companions. She argues complete faithfulness towards the shepherd, making it a seal. The type of love she feels is as powerful as death itself and holds her as tightly as death will some day.

She gave herself to the shepherd despite family objection and personal reputation. Now, being estranged, she feels the pangs of jealousy and fears abandonment. She has not seen the shepherd and the love she has allowed herself to experience has become a trap and a prison.

Her brothers had wanted her to marry into a higher station in life. She had done so, marrying the richest man in the world. Even for all that, the love she still held for the shepherd was far more valuable.
