Hi There Saints!

I'm new to the Board and really appreciate this topic especially, thanks Pastork.

I have both a Mac and a Windows pc and wonder if you know of any Christian Mac software or web sites.

I think I'll try this openoffice. I've heard it's great.

Open Office is great. I am now using Star Office 7, Sun Micro's implementation of it, on both Windows 2000, and Sun Java Desktop (Linux).

My latest positive experience is with Mozilla Firefox. Im currently using version 0.8 Its a great browser, tabbed browsing, multiple profiles, very thin(not a bunch of useless buttons clogging the top of the screen) and its open source, not designed by big brother bill

I second the motion for thunderbird. I use it as well for mail on Windows 2000. On JDS Linux I use Evolution, also free and open source.

You can find info and downloads for the latest versions of the Mozilla browser, Firefox, and Thunderbird at www.mozilla.org

 

Another GREAT free Bible program... its called the Online Bible and it has even more additions (books, commentaries, etc) than E Sword. I still like Esword a little better due to the Bible import tool and the versions of the Bible that one has access to in this way, but the Online Bible is still very good... also there are several resources from people Ken Ham and Henry Morris contra evolution... too many add ons to mention... start at http://www.onlinebible.net/
and then do to the download sections... also, do not forget to look at the "User Sent Material", I never really looked at this download area before tonight, and I found many great resources here as well....

Hey Bev.... I am not sure why you thought I was posting the information re the Bible software for you in particular, it was just a general post in this ongoing thread discussing freeware.... though I hope it was or perhaps would be beneficial to you, it is my larger hope that it might turn out to be a blessing for all who have been following this thread, thus it was a post to no one in particular....

I did, however, write in direct response to you when I gave you a link that might have Mac freeware.... did that work out? Did you find anything helpful?

Yes, I'm going through all the info bit by bit....

 

I was once an avid Online Bible user. Had been since my first free/share ware version over 10 years ago. But a recent experience has left a bad taste in my mouth.

About 4-5 years ago I bought the, then, new updated version with unlock codes for NIV and one other modern version, NASB (I think), at $20 each. I also bought CDs for my two pastor bother's in law. I was quite satisified with OLB until I kept getting messages saying I had an older version and I needed to update. I did and I lost my complete Bible program.

The only versions, etc. I could access were LXX and LXXE which I had DL. Emails to OLB I was advised that the updates were not compatible with earlier versions so I would have to buy the new updated Bible program. Since I needed OLB to teach and preach I ordered it. I had to pay full price although the website states if you have purchased earlier versions, updated versions would only cost $20. I also had to pay additional unlock fees for NIV and the other modern version.

After more than 2 months and several emails I finally received the new CD. I used OLB for a few days but quickly switched to E-Sword which I had DL and was using while I waited to get OLB back up and running. I expect secular businesses to deliberately plan in obsolescence forcing customers to buy the new model every so often but... If anyone is satisfied with OLB that is fine. But if someone is trying to decide on a low cost or free Bible program, Caveat Emptor.

 

with Esword having the Bible modules it does, there would be no reason for anyone to have to purchase anything from the Online Bible folks.... I think that if anything, I will make use of the many books that come as free modules.... sure, many of them are online, (while many are not), but the great thing is when having them as a part of a program is the searchability..... but I agree, Esword is the superior prog.. but hey, its (Online Bible) free, and its nice that they have more than 10 books from the Creationist perspective, and classic stuff from Pink, Spurgeon, Gill, Edwards, Owens etc....

 

This is a most horrible, fraudulent scam! They are liars who claim to be giving away Bible software but they are really selling it by disguising the purchase price as shipping and handling.

 

This program is fantastic! I use it every day. It is super user friendly and you don't have to be a computer genius to figure it out.

 

I agree there is no freeware better than E-sword. I compared e-sword to a hundred dollar program sold in lifeway bookstore and found that there was only one thing in e-sword that the hundred dollar program didn't have (yes I said that right, the expensive program lacked something the free had). This is a wonderful bible study tool.

 

as far as E4 goes, I think 8 bucks is a pretty fair deal for all the books offered, and importantly, the books become far more useful due to the search engine.... at any rate, I have used the cd very frequently, and guys like Sproul, Kennedy, JI Packer and Jerry Bridges seem to all think it is a pretty good deal....

 

AVG Virus Software is the best anti-virus software I have ever used! This is no joke! I have been a 'net teckie for about as long as PC'ers been sufing it...

I am on the 'net 24/7- stream an Internet Broadcast Station and get hundreds of e-mails a day (more than 700 just yesterday) AVG Virus Software works faster, better, updates automatically and its FREE. Dump McAffee and Norton- they are dinosuars.

You can go to http://www.grisoft.com and download it.

ZoneAlarm Firewall (the FREE verson) is another perfect download. It has blocked 5,980 hacks on my PC in the last 14 days. (And, you wonder why your Internet connections seem so slow?)

youve got more then enough versions for free - commentaries - and you can do anything that e-sword can do once you've spent time DLing

 

Boycotting Microsoft - especially since they quit supporting Windows 98. Even if the new Microsoft Office still worked with 98, I will not pay $250 + for it. Open Office 1.1 works great with my old pc and it was free. For program developement, I use my Sun workstation. Have plenty of free open source tools to make it easy. Why pay if you don't have to.

I am curious as to what the differences are and *if* they are significant enough to get the 'buy' version.
