High Speed at last WOO-HOO!!

    Hey there y'all, hope your day is blessed!!

    I just got my high speed DSL hook-up up and running, and all I can say is "WOW!!" I wonder why I waited so long hehehe.

    Those of you who already have switched from dial-up to DSL probably have a big grin, thinking that you were in my shoes, and were enjoying the experience of extremely fast downloads. Those who haven't switched to DSL (or cable modem or some other fast conncetion) just let me say...
    "JUST DO IT!!!" You'll wonder why you waited so long!!

    It's a whole different world, huh? We switched to DSL (which allowed us to get rid of our second phone line) two years ago in June. When I have to use a dial-up, I have to avoid graphics-intensive sites and can't believe I used to think 56k was fast.

    Seriously, it's more than just convenience; the speed allows to conduct research much more efficiently because you spend so much less time wating for the information to appear on your screen.

    When I graduated from dial-up to DSL in my office a few years ago, I was amazed by the difference. But when I was shopping for broadband at home, DSL was not yet available – I went with a cable modem.

    Believe it or not, in many cases cable broadband is faster and cheaper than DSL!

    In any case, one you go broadband, you’ll never be happy with dial-up! ;)

    To date myself, I bought my first modem in 1984 (a 300 bps model) and I dreamed of the day when I would be able to get a 1200 bps modem. Then I got a 2400 bps modem in the early 90s and was amazed by the speed. Then came 14.4k and 28.8k modems. :eek: (Those were heady days!) Then finally the unreasonably fast 56k came out.

    Now broadband is nearly the standard! :eek: :eek: :eek:

    I switched to a cable modem about 18 months ago. You are right, WOW what a difference. If I had to give up broadband I would do without Internet service, well almost.

    We made the change about a month ago and I am still adjusting to the dizziness. :D Before, with the dial-up I did more [​IMG] than anything else.

    I HATE Y'ALL!!! (except for Diane) :D I said this to my niece who asked me to help her install her DSL modem and she just laaaauuuughed. As I left her place you could hear me mumbling under my breath over and over, "It's a sin to covet...It's a sin to covet...", meanwhile she is still laughing as I head home to my VERY slow dial up. I have a 56K modem but the telephone signals are so degraded by the time they reach me that I only connect at 28,800 bps. The cable company has been promising for a couple of years that they will be offering service soon :mad: (I can't wait to gloat).

    Artimaeus, we're in a new subdivision just 35 miles east of Atlanta, for goodness sake, and the phone company admitted that not only did they NOT wire for enough phones for all the houses, but they put in the oldest type wire they still use! Now all our neighbors are on a waiting list for more than one phone line! We had four until recently.... and are now down to 2. Snap, Crackle, Pop.... is all we hear! We keep getting booted from all the noise in the lines! Oh well.... silver lining.... Um.... Well.... oh... no.... uh... Well, I'll find it yet!

    I'm just too cheap. [​IMG] I don't have cable, won't get cable, already pay a phone bill and am not all that happy about paying $12 a month for internet access anyway. I can't see exchanging my twelve buck dial up for a 40 buck cable service.

    I had a T-1 in college - connected right from my dorm room - so I did get a little spoiled, but I'm not doing too badly with my 56K.

    After three days of high speed, tonight has been the first time I've been online (from work) on dial-up. I think I'm going to have to have a long talk with the boss. He needs to get some high speed in the workplace. It would certainly speed up and increase productivity.

    I guess I'm spoiled already hehehe

    We have DSL at work, and it has amazing effects on productivity. Dial-up was cumbersome. Now we are all on the DSL network, and Google is just a few keystrokes away.

    Kelly, high-speed service is truly addictive. I'm cheap (ask the wife and the kids), but it's well worth it. I would give up cable (including the History Channel) before DSL.

    I've had my cable hookup for awhile, but it's only hooked up to one computer. I live in a 3 computer home. So I was wondering if anyone has any advice about a good hardware package to get for hooking all of the computers up with the cable access? There's a few makes and models out there, but they all claim to be the best.

    We have three networked through a Linksys router using standard networking cable.(Two machines with Windows ME and one with XP.)

    I've been very happy; configuration was remarkable simple and the network has been extremely reliable.

    The router also provides a hardware firewall for extra protection.
