AMD or Pentium

    I'm buying a laptop soon and I was wondering if anyone has used the Athlon 2000xp or higher.

    I'm told that the higher Mhz Athlon chips far outperform the Pentium 4 and I would like to know if anyone agrees or disagrees with this through prior usage of either or.

    Go Pentium

    AMD chips have brought me nothing but grief
    although they have a tendency to keep working
    under harsher conditions

    I have just the opposite experience. I have used Intel and AMD chips. I currently have an Athlon 2000XP, and it runs like a champ. No problems with either WindowsXP or Linux. Also, much less costly than Intel.

    Actually it depends on what you desire to do with the machine

    Processor intensive - without Graphics
    its a tossup as certain programs grind the AMD to a halt

    Processor Intensive - with graphics
    go Pentium
    Gaming - some programs will not work well with AMD chipset

    Just word-processing and email and browsing
    go cheaper and that is AMD

    Just my opinion - I still curse the day I met my first AMD chip

    AMD all the way.

    At work my graphics computer is a 1.1 AMD. My brother in-law has a 1.7 pentium 4. My AMD out performs his pentium.

    I've been told this by quite a few people recently and have decided to go with the AMD Athlon 2600xp mobile processor for my laptop (which I'll be buying on friday or saturday).......I've been debating on which to get for some time now as I'm gonna be spending a lot of money so I wanted to make sure I made a choice I'd be pleased with.

    Hello Rich,

    How is your new laptop? Have you bought it yet?
    I bought mine about 3 month ago; a Toshiba 5205 S405 with Pentium 2GHz. I love this little machine. My Desktop however is an HP with an Athlon and I was not very thrilled with its performance. Anyway....

    Hey Felix

    I was debating getting a Toshiba also, as I used to have one several years ago. They are very reliable little machines indeed!

    I have heard mixed responses from people regarding the Athlons, but usually only based upon the desktop processor. I've heard good reports about the higher speed Mobile processors from AMD so I'm hoping I won't be dissapointed. I only really want it for burning Cd's, using the net and maybe for running AutoCad and for using Word and Excel. I'm getting 512 DDR Ram with it, so I'm thinking that the memory side of it won't be an issue. I haven't got it yet, but will be paying for it on friday or saturday.

    If anyone has had experiance with the Mobile XP Athlon processors, can you let me know what you think?.

    Hey Rich,

    Sorry for jumping here again. I was very happy that you consider a Toshiba a good machine. Indeed they are very reliable. I have spent about two months myself on 'investigations' to see which one fits my needs. I ended up getting the S505 (correction) and I truly love it. If you consider price and performance, I truly believe Toshiba comes in the best. I mostly do webdesign and CD burning on mine and its performance is awesome. Not to mention the Dolby Digital Surround Sound System built in....Wow!

    Anyway,
